I don't use weight , instead I use a cajun rig and either live bait ( shrimp or pin fish ) or when fishing on the bottom, i use cut bait, mullet, poggie, or the best is cut lady fish,or cut crab on a #4 or #6 circle hook , with a slider weight rigged on the leader.
If you have a lot of rocks I would use a torpedo or a pancake weight, and I would rig it on a drop shot or a t-leader on mono just heavy enough to hold the weight, that way if it does become stuck you can break the mono and not lose everything.
Also I would use a med/heavy rod about 7' ,and a Shimano Stradic 4000, or similar style combo. Load the reel with about 30yds. of stout backing and as much Suffix 25 braid as you can put on the spool, and then a mono leader if you so desire.
Tie your hook directly to the line DO NOT USE SNAP SWIVELS HERE, as a 40" or 50" red can severly test your equipment. once hooked up, be ready for a fight that can last up to 30 min.
There is nothing like hooking a hawg Redfish , the fight is awesome.
And please get your picture and return my buddies back to the water as fast as you can, as they are tired .
Hope this helps some.
If satan is knocking at your door. Just ask Jesus , would you get that for me ?
