Pegsguy,... Roughly [1] hour and 10 minutes. /// From Olathe = right now you would have to take 10 Hwy West,  to Lawrence, Ks. drive through Lawrence until getting to & turning North on Massachusetts Street. [kind of like Main Street]

After you get just past 6th street you will want to get in the right turn lanes to turn right at the stop light taking a combination of hwys 59, 40, and 24 North. Continue North to the town of Perry, Ks. Some of the hwys [I think 59 and 40] will go diff directions as you head towards Perry, but staying on hwy 24 continuing North, and following the signs you can't miss getting there.

There is a Phillips 66 gas station at the corner of the road on the edge of Perry, // you need to turn right here and go North until you get very close to the dam. There is a gas station and Cafe there. Turn left just past them, going to Outlet Park [about a mile down the road.] Once you get to the outlet area one can fish on either side.

I prefer the West side as it is more flat and easier to walk and fish from after walking downhill from where most folks park on a small mud and gravel patch close and just before the pit toilets.

Call me at home, [816] 326-7891 if you need further info.

Thanks for the info. I have family in Olathe and the wife wants to go back (we just made a quick trip in May) and spend some time exploring. As long as I can find a place to fish she can explore to her heart's content! Tom

Pegsguy, [and any other visiting NAFC members] when you return to Olathe, Ks. give me a call or direct email [sscasteel@msn.com] or another message on the BB here in this section.

I know several reserviors and other places to fish near Olathe. Maybe we can team up for a day of fishing somewhere.

The latest updates on PERRY and POMONA Res.

The Missouri River is now in flood stage and according to local KC, MO. news reports should equal or exceed the flood waters of 1993.
This will force Perry to hold onto any water coming into it, as the released water from it goes into the Kansas River [KAW] and the Kansas River is currently high and rolling lots of water into the Missouri River causing it to rise faster.

PERRY is already a minimum of 3 1/2 ft high / / releasing only 25 CFS, // and rising due to recent rains, and more heavy rains expected in the next 48 to 72 hours.
I expect Perry to get at least 7 ft [or more] high and won't be able to release water down the Deleware River into the Kansas River, for at least another week to 10 days. This will be after the Missori River gets back well within its banks, and not a threat to flooding, even with the Kansas River dumping water into it.

POMONA  is currently 5.67 ft high and rising.  It too, is in water holding stage as well, [keeping water back so 110 Mile Creek can't add more released water, to prevent the Maris Des Cygnes River from getting higher and do more flooding] and is only releasing 15 CFS for now.
I expect it to get close to 10 ft high again due to recent rains, and more rain expected in the next 48-72 hrs.
It might be able to release water by next weekend, but that depends on how much more rain arrives, and how fast the Maris Des Cygnes River gets back safely within its banks  again.

Once again, Mother Nature provides anyone [in the near future] who likes to fish, a chance to catch fish for many days below these two Reservior dams once they can safely release water again.

The latest update on PERRY and POMONA. = Given today in reverse order.

POMONA was at 10.55 ft. high on 6/19/10. Today, 6/20... it is down to 10.46 ft. high and water is now being released at 449 CFS.
I highly suspect that the Maris Des Cygnes River // which Pomona releases water into through 110 Mile Creek, // is now safely in its banks enough to start releasing water carefully, and I expect the CFS to increase back up to 2000, [or even 2500] very shortly.
The fish should re-adjust [I hope] better to this new release of water than last time in May, and many more will be caught. = Esp. in the early morning and evening hrs.

If so, then for at least the next 2 weeks, // as "The Thing" of The Fantastic Four would say  "IT'S CLOBBERIN TIME"

PERRY is still in holding stage  [and will be for a while too] is currently 8.10 ft. high and raising, and only releasing low flow of 25 CFS.
It also received rain out there yesterday and this morning all around it [esp. above  it] and currently lake inflow CFS is 3,725 per second.

I highly suspect PERRY will have to hold water back a very long time before getting to release much at all, as the Missouri River is currently on the rise, flooding and out of its banks in many places. At least one levee has broken causing flooding upriver from KC, MO. And many areas in Southern Nebraska, and Northern Mo. [which will drain into either the MO. River or PERRY,]  have been hit hard by rain the last several days.

The Kansas River [KAW] which PERRY releases into down the Delaware River, // also is very high and contributing to the  MO. Rivers flooding problems, and it too, continues to receive run-off from recent rains in its drainage basin causing it to raise as well.
The Sat. evening local News long range Weather forecasts show rain possibilities in KS. and MO. every other day for the upcoming week.

It could be close to another good [2] weeks [or more] before it is safe to release any water at all out of PERRY.

PERRY can and does have the capability to release a good 5000 CFS [or more] when it has to. I've seen it happen and fished in it before.
Thus reducing the lake water level in a much shorter period of time. This may happen in this case, depending in the near future what flooding problems are going on with the Kansas and Missouri Rivers.
PERRY may start out at 5000 CFS [or more] for a while, when it finally can turn loose water, and eventually reduce it back to 3500 CFS.

Pomona in the meantime, should continue releasing water even with more rain, as long as the Maris Des Cygnes River stays safely within its banks, and Pomona's release water won't contribute to any [or create] additional flooding down river.
Any heavy rains down river though on soaked grounds already, the run-off will have to be considered and Pomona may be forced to reduce CFS, or shut down again.

The way things look now for me, I will be fishing below POMONA    up until time to go to the NAFC open member meet at La Crosse, WI. [7/14-18/] then return home in time to fish below PERRY.... which may have just started to, or only been releasing water for a short time.

Nice to get the best of two quality places to fish [with a fishing vacation out of state thrown in between]

The most recent updates.   POMONA has started releasing water and is now at 1000 CFS, it is just over 9 ft. high. I will begin fishing below the dam there ASAP.

PERRY is over 10 ft high, [very close to 11] and holding water back, still only releasing 25 CFS.
Local KC, MO. news and weather reports that the Missouri River is still under flood warnings for up to [2] more weeks.

So any rain that continues to happen in parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, the very NE corner or KS. and any draining into the Kansas River and the Northern border, and Upper NW corner of Missouri, will all determine how long the MO. River floods. Could be a good 2-3 weeks yet before any water can safely be released out of PERRY and down the Delaware River into the Kansas River.

The Kansas River is high too. Contributing to the flooding problems. So as long as the Mo. River is high and out of its banks [several levee's have broken North of KC, Mo. and a few towns have been flooded]

Latest Update.   PERRY is still holding back water. Almost 11 ft. high, and still releasing only 25 CFS.

Will be crossing the MO. River on 7/1/10 twice. Should be able to compare it to last weeks depth, and see if it has gone  up/down.

Went to POMONA Res. on Tuesday 6/29. Got there at 11 AM.  2000 CFS being released.
Caught two nice Crappie, a small Sunfish, and 3 Gar.  Left at 5 PM. Had a lot of bites on tube jigs, but missed many of them.

Many fish, = Buffalo Carp, Drum, Gar, and an occas. White Bass, seen rolling on surface, or jumping out of the water many times.

Water should be released for at least 3 more days before reducing the CFS for the July 4th Holiday weekend.

A laugher... Sure wish I  would have had a video camera with me.

Small water turtles were floating on the surface with the current. One such particular turtle I was watching, was lazily floating upstream in the whirlpool  and all of a sudden  it turned 180* and was going down river real fast. Its back was half out of the water. I laughed as it looked like a turtle water skiing.

Don't know if the turtle got in an unexpected fast current going down river, or as I highly suspect, a large fish may have tried attacking the turtle and missing, and the turtle held on for dear life on the fishes back.

I went across the MO. River on 7/01/10 twice, and it is back within its banks, but very close to the top. Judging from where it had been, by mud lines on trees and flattened down items, I would say it has gone down about 3 ft.

Floating debris were still visible, [logs and sticks mostly] means that water up above the KC, MO. area is still out of its banks somewhere.

What is possibly bad news, is local weather forecasters are forecasting rain for 3 days - 7/4-6/10. This could lead to new flooding!!!!

PERRY is still holding back water [10.91 ft high] and releasing only 25 CFS.

POMONA is releasing 2000 CFS  and around 5.44 ft. high.

Hurricane Alex certainly has caused problems here lately in both KS. and MO.

The rain seems to keep being pulled up from Texas, into Kansas, and striking certain Reservoirs, and then going NE up into Nebraska, Iowa, and Northern MO. and causing more flooding water that will have to come into the MO. River.
Both the KANSAS [KAW] and The MISSOURI River are at flood stage again, after starting to go down on Thursday of last week, and much more run off is expected through at least this Thursday 7/8/10.

PERRY is still releasing 25 CFS, but since 7/01, has jumped from 10.91 ft high to over 13 ft.,  and closing in on 14.

POMONA was releasing 2000 CFS until last Friday, then cut it back to 1160+, then down to 162 CFS. POMONA is only 2.30 ft high, but could be back on the way up. It seems to be getting some inflow, but nothing like PERRY.

Two other mentionables here  =  MILFORD Res. And TUTTLE CREEK, are being blasted daily with rain along with PERRY.

MILFORD is currently over 16 ft high.

TUTTLE CREEK is at least 26 ft high and had started releasing 4000 CFS, but had to cut back due to heavy rains again, and large amounts of inflow. I believe it may be back near 28 ft high again.

In 1993,  TUTTLE CREEK  held back water [I believe 30-34 ft] until it was either going out the emergency outflow, or the US Army Corps of Engineers was afraid the dam would break. Water was ordered released to relieve pressure on the dam, even though the water would go down stream into an already backed up and flooding KANSAS River.

Had the dam broken however, Only God knows what deaths and damage would have occured.
However if the dam had broken, I do believe that with the MISSOURI River already flooding and the KANSAS River backed up and adding more, / an extra 30+ft of surging flood waters suddenly, / the levees in the West Bottoms of KC, KS. and MO., would have been breached and flooded numerous business's, and who know's what amount of financial loss, damage, and deaths would have occured along with this.

The only good note from all this is, The MISSISSIPPI River is currently not flooding [as in 1993] forcing water back up the MO. River. Right now things are much more under control and eventually the MO. River will go down and water can then be released safely from other KS. Res. [including  PERRY]

The latest update.  POMONA is just over 2 ft high and releasing 500 CFS.

PERRY is over 14 ft high, and has started releasing 500 CFS. I expect this to increase daily, as the KANSAS River apparently is now starting to go down, and the threat of flooding from it reduced.

For those interested.  MILFORD has started releasing 6000 CFS and TUTTLE CREEK is releasing 5000 CFS.
I figure the CFS will increase at both, as MIILFORD was over 16 ft high, and TUTTLE CREEK was over 31 ft high.

We are back from vacation in La Crosse, WI.  The latest updates.

POMONA = .80 ft high, & letting out 500 CFS. This should be reduced to 150 or less at any time.

PERRY = can't figure them out.   Monday 7/19, they were releasing 500 CFS. Tuesday, they increased that to 2899 CFS.
Weds. it was increased to 4000 CFS.
And today, ..   The CFS has been reduced back to 1244.

The KC Star newspaper fishing report in todays Sports section states that PERRY is 16 ft. high. My C o E sources state only 14.70 ft high.

MILFORD and TUTTLE CREEK are both pouring water out as high as 6-8000 CFS.

The latest updates on PERRY and POMONA RES.

PERRY is 10.63 ft. high and letting out 8000 CFS.
POMONA is .35 ft. high and reduced its CFS to 15.

MILFORD Res. has gone down to 5.27 ft. high, and they have reduced CFS there to 2000.

TUTTLE CREEK is 24.97 ft. high and letting out 2000 CFS. [2] days ago it was 9000.

Don't know if the CFS was shut down for public safety over the weekend, or if the area received strong rains again in all the recent passing storms.
