Barkley is a very good lake for crappie.  Go a few miles west, and Kentucky lake is even better.  If You are going to be there for a week, You should think about hiring a guide for the first day of fishing.  Both lakes are good for crappie, Large & Small mouth bass, plus in the spring some decent stripers can be caught.  I do not know of any guides on Barkley.  You could check with the state park.  They would know if any guides are working there.

There is an add for Moors Resort to the right of this post. They will know the absolute best weeks for crappie.  I have never been there, but hear that they do have good crappie guides.  If You are going to use a guide, for just one day.  Do not tell Him that.  Some guides, wont't even take You out, if You tell them that.  And, if He does take You. You will not get to fish His best spots.  The good guides are very protective of their best spots.  Catching a 2 pound plus crappie, is a real possibility, on ether lake.  I hope, You find out some good info.  And catch a limit.  If You hit it at the right time for the crappie.  You will be back, for many years.

If You are going to fish without a guide.  Try Twin Lakes, Smiths Bay, Sugar Bay,  or Johnithen Creek.  All of the Bays, other than Johnithen, are on the LBL side of the lake.  And have launching ramps at each bay.  Both lakes can get very rough during windy days.  But the bays are usualy fishable, in spite of the wind.  On the real bad days, You should trailer Your boat, from bay to bay.  Instead of getting beat up, by running up the lake.  Most days. are OK to run the lake though.  I think You will enjoy the lakes a lot.  Good luck, and great fishing!

I don't know much about Lake Barkley but I grew up a few miles from Ky Lake. Check out Johnathan Creek on Hwy 68 its a great place to go crappie fishing. I'm planning a trip there myself  in April (I moved away -Air Force) and I'm hoping to hit Johnathan Creek. There is a public boat dock just off the highway.

Fished Lake Barkley a few years back with my brother-in-law. He use to live in Eddyville. We fished out in front of the Prison. Picked up a bunch of Crappie all through the area. There is a resort and landing right there. Can't remember the name of it. Does anyone know its name? I think it was something Creek.

Bayliner, Does Eddy Creek sound familar?  It is one of the bigger,  bays on the lake.  And is indeed a good one for fishing crappie.  And the prison is just to the north of where Eddy Creek emptys into Barkley.  It used to freak Me out to fish there at first.  But after awhile, I no longer paid it any attention. When I first saw the prison from a distance, I thought it was a Catholic church.  I used to fish down there during the summer, for catfish.  There are some very large blues, and flatheads there.  At the time You fished there, You were about 16 miles by lake, from Rock Castle.  Which is where I live.  So, we may have crossed paths at one time.
