Hi Chris, I worked for two years in St Cloud. I can guarantee you that the Mississippi from Elk River to Camp Ripley is an awsome Small Mouth fishery. I put on shorts and old tennis shoes and waded. Used jigs on a spinning rod (Try a YUM Crawdad in pumpkin color in the fall) or topwater bugs on the fly rod. I also used Clouser Minnows, if you are worried about the pike just get some tieable leader or 50+ mono for a tipet. (Sportsmans in ST Cloud has a large selection of everything flyfishing related). Look for swirls by boulders in the river. By wading you will learn where the deep holes are. Just don't go in deeper than your elbows. My first Bronzeback from this area was 18 1/2 inches and Weighed 5+ pounds. Yes I have two witnesses. Good Luck Jim |
