Just took a run out to Holter Lake.  Most fish are holding at 40-60 feet down.  Kokanee are bouncing close to the suface nearest the dam launch area as you first put in approximately 50 yards out.  Departure point shows signs of slowing with the Walleye, as trolling spoons and rapalas are not yielding fish.  Jigging is not working either.  What seems to be landing fish is spinners (Mepps).  Perch are schooling near Log Gulch, and the First Inlet on the far side of the lake closest to the dam.  I took an informal survey at the main boat launch, and found only one person out of 35 asked had anything keepable.  Personally, I caught 3 small walleye, in the 7 - 10" range, so not worth keeping.  Close to departure point and Indian Head, and Split Rock areas, algae bloom is thick.  As you head up into the Gates, Perch holding at 3-4 feet closest to the inlets.  Bobber and crawlers working best here.  Fish are in the 10-13 inch range were being caught.

    Happy Fishing...

Pre-Spawn appears to be in full swing.  The only fish that are biting are juvie rainbows in the 6-8 inch size.  Water temps are between 59 and 61, and while you do seen Salmon splashing top side, they are not hitting either.  Cowbells tipped with crawler are not working, downriggers are a zilch.  Departure Point and Split Rock parts of the canyon producing very small perch, not even really worth mentioning.  We were able to land one 18" Rainbow, on a trolling spoon, in about 40 feet of water, but that was a fluke, It was actually snagged by the treble on the spoon.  Fishing reports from other lakes in the area are Good Fishing at Hauser, Fair to Good at Canyon Ferry, and Lake Helena is Poor to Slow.  Algae Bloom is thick still, and though the nights are getting colder, the water is still a bit warmish.  The beartooth is producing fish in the 6" and smaller range, so anyone heading in this direction for fishing should probably look to Hauser first, then Canyon Ferry.
