Is there anyone out there that fishes the Umpqua for Sturgeon.  I live in Nv. but I am going to spend the summer in Oregon.  I have a 22" boat and I would like to catch my first sturgeon.  Any help would be appreciated.

Wish I could help you, but don't fish down that way.  Might look up Jody Smith Guide Service.  He fishes the Umpqua and it might be worth your while to take a trip with him to find out how and where to fish them.

Try the mountain side of the river, across from the elk viewing area, upstream from Reedsport.  Use a depth finder to find a hole, drop ancor uptide of the hole.  Place a sand shrimp on the bottom in the hole, use enough weight to keep the bait on the bottom, but light enough to feel a bite.  You'll propably catch more sculpin and crab than sturgeon, but it's worth it.  Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thanks for the info.  Last year I didn't have enough time to try everything I wanted too, including trying a guide.  This year I am looking at taking 3 or 4 months so I can really get into it.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I know exactly where you are talking about.  I looked at the River last year while everyone else was looking at the Elk and eating.  I will give your suggestion a try and let you know how it does.

Most guides are teachers and know they may be giving away their secrets to success.  They are counting on it in fact.  In a day of fishing, they may give away a few of their spots and a few of their secrets.  It's up to the angler to take advantage of it, learning the type of water holing the fish, baits which are working, etc.  You sound like you would be a good student, looking at the river instead of the elk.  When you get up here, maybe we can get together up north a ways.

It looks like we will be heading that way around the middle of May.  But there are a lot of stops before we get there.  But I will keep in touch since this is only our second year up that way.  I do have my computer with me in the motorhome so I have contact with everyone.

Let me know where you are up North and there is a chance we may get up there.  Also what you guide for.

Hey Dave, the road is long.  I've been spending most of my time going back and forth to Chicago and Ohio(man it's cold over there).  We drove over 5000 miles in 4 days, I'm glad they gave us a few days off, we've been going for 3 weeks now.  I try to check in when ever I can.  Hope your still catching fish. I fish mainly the north coast rivers for Salmon and Steelhead.  In May time frame there will be some Spring Chinook and Summer Steelhead around the Tillamook area Rivers.  River levels determine whether we float or drag the boat.  I'll keep an eye out for you.

I will touch base with you as we are leaving and heading your way.  I have been spending my time on boat repairs so all is in tip top shape to start the summer.

Last year we spent most of our time in Brookings and Winchester Bay area for salmon, bottom fish and crabs.  It is alot different than anything we have in NV. and very tasty.  So I am looking forward to getting back up where they have some fish.
