hey all, just wanted to let you know what has been going on the last two weeks, the last two saturdays i have been up fishing around fletchers for shad and stripers. the shad are there in force i have been using shad adrts in blue/yellow, white/flo.green, and shad spoons have been working too i personally like the orange but an angler next to me this morning was using gold. as for the stripers, with the water still being so clear and low your presentation has to appear as natural as possible, and fish at either dusk or dawn (actually, thats the same for the shad, they have been much more active in low light conditions), some have been caught with bucktails in white and some on sassy shads/swimbaits, i also recieved info this morning that the majority of stripers are still holding down river. the herring are also slow on getting here (another reason the stripers are behind) luckily i was able to hook a few with some small darts in white and pink, i cut them up, threw em on a circle hook and not a striper would look at it, i did how ever hook a 26 1/2# channel cat so that was a big bright spot this morning, all in all shad are there and being caught, herring and stripers are slow, and the catfish are picking up most baits put out for the stripers, good luck all hope to see you out there

finally got to fletchers and caught 20 or so hickory shad.......try using pinks blues and greens....also plain gold spoons.......i also had a striper pick up on some cut herring, but i had my baitrunner set too tight and she dropped the bait when she felt the pressure......as soon as we get a little more stable weather it should be game on

Hey whats up dc.  I am new here and will be here for a couple of years.  Im not sure were to go fishing around here.  I live in alexandria.  All i have done is inshore saltwater fishing.  But it is so far away i might as well start fishing fresh.  I would like to go fishing some were around here.  Im not sure what kind of lisence i need   they make it complicated, freshwater, trout permit, paying extra to fish somewhere for a day.  It imposible to do things now adays..  Thanks for any help

Keep some fish in the cooler. Never know when u will need a bite to eat.

hey jimmiesfan48 welcome aboard......if you like inshore saltwater i would venture to say you like stripers.....if that is the case you are hitting  great time for them on the potomac right now....they are on their annual spawning run......along with a lot of schoolie sized stripers (20-35" or 10lbs and under) there have already been many caught this year weihting more than 40 lbs.......as you can see from the reports there are a lot of shad in the river right now as well.......during the rest of the year there is great fishing in any direction....reservoirs and lakes in the area for largemouth, musky, pike, walleye.......the upper potomac for smallmouth, walleye, and tiger musky.......lower potomac for BIG cats (the new maryland state record blue cat was caught a few weeks ago a few miles south of alexandria near ft washington, it was 67 lbs) largemouth, schoolie stripers, and many others......there is a lot of fishing in the immediate area and it is getting better with every warm day.......oh and the license thing.....you need a dc license if you fish the potomac from chain bridge to the woodrow wilson bridge, even if you are on the va side.......as for va, i usually just get the resident license (if you are military you can too) and pick up the trout license later if i feel the urge to fish for them......anyway, hope this helped........lemme know if you need anymore info

man i miss dc and md fishing, hey old guard try driving right outside the city to fort washington, not the park but just a lil ways from it, theres a lil spot called swan creek and its on swan creek rd just across from the marina, this time of year the crappie are big and bitin' on minnows , also a great catfishing spot also perch and bass and a few stripers here and there , you have to park just beyond the marina on the left hand side, theres a lil trail leading to a point on the creek and if ya get there at the right time on the right tide you'll kill'em ive pulled 16" slabs outta there as well as 10lbs and up cats just google swan creek  marina and get directions you wont be disapointed but if yaa head down 210 indian head highway toward charles county hang a right where the safeway is just past the ntb and follow it straight go round the circle and go straight 1/2 way around it thats swann point rd and about a mile up is the marina and you'll see the spot im talkin bout...hope this helps cuz if i were still in md , dc area thats where id be ......jay

may mother nature bless your line with every cast
