I fish the Chippewwa Flowage yearly and i heard that the hwy. CC bridge was clogged last year by a bog. Therefore, i assume that you cant get from the east end to the west end and vice-versa. Is this true? If so, cant the DNR do what the Army did in Minnesota with the ice jam?(use a small charge to break up the bog) Walleye. Tight lines. |

Relax, it's gone for now and all is ok. If you understand what a bog is you'd know they are affected by the wind where they go. In short bogs are floating islands comprised of roots of trees & bushes etc. The one that closed off CC bridge was about 2 acres and if it hadn't moved you'd have thought it was a regular island. It has trees 30 ft tall growing on it. I was there when it closed off the bridge during the FHNB event and saw it up close & personal. I was just down there last Sunday and it's no where in sight now. I don't know of a better way to explain it but dealing w/one is a major task. That happend 2 years ago, and haven't heard it has happend since. Always drink upstream from the herd -----

Well that's good news to hear. Hopefully the bog doesn't do that again any time soon. (I'm fishing the flowage in July) Walleye. Tight lines. |

Check with The Landing Resturant & Resort (715-462-3626) if it worry's you. Their right at the CC bridge. Or check back here. By the way, according to the DNR net samples this spring, the western half of the flowage (from CC) has better size & quantity for walleyes then the eastern half. I go there every year and it is indeed a beautiful wilderness lake. By the way Badger, I never knew that the west half had better walleye fishing. (I've always fished the western half but never knew that it it's better for walleyes -thanks for the info) Walleye. Tight lines. |

Heres a little history of the Big Chip. Theres an earthen dam on the Chippewa River creating the hydro electric reservoir. The joining of nine rivers, 11 natural lakes and numerous streams became what is known today as the Chippewa Flowage. It's Wisconsin's largest wilderness lake with more than 140 islands. Rust colored water in the east and clear water in the west reflects the diverse water sources feeding the pool from either creeks of tamarack swamps or natural springs.
That could explain why one half is more productive than the other. Always drink upstream from the herd -----

That's odd that you should mention that. Last fall we stayed at the Campground (see map). I marked MAJOR schools of fish (red X's) and single big fish (pink dots) on the East side.....but couldn't get a bite And we tried a wide variety of stuff in that area too

Then those fish probably were inactive because the inactive ones usually go to open water and/or suspend and get "diagnosed" by Dr. John's(my) theory that they have "lockjaw". Get that dynamite ready for next time you run into that problem. Tight lines. |

Last fall we were up there the 17th - 23rd of Sept...and though the nights were a tad cool....days were OK except the wind was going the whole time for some reason. Which was a little on the rough side for my 16 ft jon. This time I'll take my tri-hull I'm looking at that same time frame again though....unless someone has a better thought. Don't worry about it- I don't feel offended. Anyway, when we dont catch what we want to, we fish for bass, pike, etc. Tight lines. |
