I fish a small(2-2.5 acre)conservation pond,i've only cought large mouth out of it,2-3 pounders are common and my bigest is 6.32.My problem is the strikes are regular but the good hook sets are not.The fish are aggresive and will hit almost anything but getting a good set is a problem. This is all the more frustrating due to the fact that after a couple of strikes on a piece of bank they seem to run and hide.Is this a presentation problem, technical error,or something to do with the population?I'm sure the big one is waiting for me I'm just not sure how to get him lipped.your insight and wisdom is greatly appreciated.

This sounds like either an equipment problem or technique issue. The fish disappearing after a couple of misses is normal in my book. Make sure your hooks are sharp, I have had issues with new hooks, even on quality lures. Are you fishing with mono? Could be your hookset technique-too soft, too hard or too slow are all a problem. Short strikes may also be a problem, consider a trailer hook. Tom

like Tom said. Make sure you have sharp hooks. I have not used this product yet but I bet a automatic electric hook sharpener would be a good investment, or just sharpen the old fashioned way. you did not mention what you are using for bait or lure. See if there is any connection between what you are using and missed fish.

Dull hooks might be the problem, but there are other factors to consider. How are you fishing, and what type of rod and line are you using? If the action is too slow (rod bends all the way to the butt section), it won't have enough backbone to get a hookpoint to penetrate mouth tissue. Speaking generally, a 6 1/2- to 7-foot meduim to medium-heavy action rod is the way to go. How about the line? Is it a mono that stretches a lot? Here again, excess line stretch will hamper hookpoint penetration. You know best the line diameter, color etc. that works best, but if you think line stretch might be a trouble spot, consider going with a fluoro or braid.

I use a 61/2' rod light-medium and 6lb.mono.I generaly fish plastics on a texas rig, i will also use a small rat or frog if they are hitting on top.I've tried soft pulls up to trying to rip their lips off. I will catch one fish out of every 5-6 hits, wich is not bad i suppose. This is a new rod and reel i'm using this year so that might the problem.thanks for the help.

From your description, I suspect you're not getting hook penetration. Before giving up on your new rod-and-reel combo, try spooling 10-pound fluoro line, or a thin braid with a fluoro or mono leader.

What type of hooks are you using?    if your useing standard worm hooks try opening the hook gap a little by bending the point up this will help set the hook into the roof of the fishes mouth more.. or go to a wide gap hook.

one other thing to check is where your plastic is on the hook after a missed strike ... look to see if the plastic is balling up in the hook gap if it is go to a larger hook..

and as the others said make sure your hooks are sharp it doesn't take much draging a hook arrossed a rock or brush to dull them.

have a great season on the water

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR EQUIPMENT IS "UNDER GUNNED" . GO WITH AT LEAST 10 LB TEST (MIN) A 7 ft ROD ( MH ) AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO SET THE
    HOOK!

SET IT HARD ON BASS !

IF YOUR FISHING WITH PLASTICS LET UM TAKE IT FOR A COUNT OF 3 OR MORE. SOUNDS LIKE YOUR GETTING THE FISH TO BITE, BUT MABE YOU
ARE SETTING THE HOOK TOO SOON!

I HAVE ALSO HAD LUCK WITH TOP WATERS , BUT DON'T SET THE HOOK ON THE STRIKE , WAIT A SECOND UNTIL THE FISH STARTS TO RUN, THEN SET.

I USE TO LOOSE A LOT OF BASS IN THE EARLY DAYS, CAUSE I DID'NT SET THE HOOK HARD ENOUGH! OR WAIT KONG ENOUGH!

i used to have the same problem drop shoting with light line and light rod until i started using a sweep set. when you feel a bite lower your rod, reel up slack ,then set hook in a sweeping motion to the side and up. it should take a couple seconds.
