Looking at a gar is like looking back into prehistoric times. With a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth and an elongated body armored with large rugged scales, these strong and tenacious fish appear, for the most part, much like their ancient ancestors. It’s no wonder that, for diehard gar anglers, no other species is as challenging or exciting to catch. Welcome to the gar forum.

I used to love catching them when I lived in Florida. Wish we had them here.

I know the last post here was months ago, but I just read this thread, so here goes.
Around here, the folks who fish for gar eat them. They either fry them up, or make
gar-balls out of them. Seems as though they taste great...at least to the guys eating
    'em! LOL

Very few are thrown on the shore here in southeast Texas. There were a couple thrown on
the shore a few years ago, little 3 foot long nose gar, but before long, they had crawled,
flipped, or rolled back into the water.

Most the guys here that fish for gar come out around dusk and stay most of the night.
They mostly use 6 to 8" mullet or some other bait fish of similar size. They use a double hook
and about a 2 foot wire leader. Throw the line out with plenty of weight on it and see what
happens. Lots of action when they land one, that's for sure.

At any rate, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it! Glad to re-find this forum. Seems like lots
    of good info here.

    Tight lines,

    Salty Dan
    Orange Texas
If at first you don't succeed, maybe you shouldn't try sky diving!

I do not target them but when I do catch one it is a fun time and I always try and release them alive. After all if something has survived this long it should be aloud to continue unless it taste good and is of the right size.
