i found a couple of old lures my grandfather used 'back in the day' and i'm trying to see if there is some value to them. the first is a heddon dowagiac minnow model 290gp, it's in its' original box, the lure is labeled heddon zig wag. it's in relative good condition some crazing of the paint. the second lure is a heddon vamp. it's in a creek chub bait co. box and it's seen better days with some chipping of the paint. i'm curious as to whether there is any value, aside from the sentimental kind. if anyone is familiar with these and could offer some feedback, i would be greatly appreciative. thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and get back to me. keep your line wet.....till then, ciao for now.

With the paint chips, your Vamp is pretty much sentemental value.  I am still hunting for the other bait...

This is the only reference to the Zig-Wag that I could find (so far).  I took this text from "Old Fishing Lures & Tackle, 6th edition by Carl F. Luckey:

The 8300 was the first to come along (1928), then the #8340 Zig-Wag Junior in 1937.  The 8360 King-Zig-Wag was last, becoming available in 1939.  All three were still being offered in the late 1940s and early 1950s.  When first encountered in catalogs (1928) the listing states "Zig-Wag (improved)."  This seems to indicate that the plug was already being produced.  Even though the author found absolutly no earlier reference to the lure, it is possible that it can be found in an earlier and different design.  My question to you is, is this lure a jointed lure?  Because this is what is shown in the book.
    #8300 - 4 1/2" long, wt. is 3/4 oz  collector value - $35 to $65
    #8340 - 3 1/2" long, wt. is 1/2 oz  collector value - $40 to $60

Color or finish: White body with red head, green frog, green scale, green scale with red head, pike scale, pike scale with red head, shiner scale with red head, natural scale, natural scale with red head, bullfrog, white body with silver specks and red head.

I hope this helps you out...I'll keep looking tho...

regarding your query about the zig wag, it is a jointed lure 4 1/2 inches long w/2 treble hooks. head is red w/black shading around an amber eye, the body is yellow w/red dots on the side facing the head. 'heddon zig wag' stenciled in red along the underside of the body. hope the additional detail helps to clarify the design for you. thank you so much for your feedback. keep your line wet, till then, ciao for now.

That could be a special order color...

The Heddon box you have is for a lure called a "King Stanley"....and the "GP" means it's the "gold plated" model.

I have 2  of the NP....nickel plated ones

If you click this link it will take you to scanned Heddon catalogs

A good source for any info about old lures is Dan Basore. He was at a local sport show and I brought in some of my old lures for him to look at. Off the top of his head he gave me a little history on each one and if there was any value to them. He writes a column for Midwest outdoors each month on fishing history. You can send him e-mails and pics and he will help you with any info he can, he also has an 800 # . Contact him at OLLURES@aol.com or 1-800-347-4525
