The river I fish is full of Longnose Gars. They are always stripping bait from my hooks when i catfish. Is there a way catch these fish. They have a narrow bony jaw full of sharp teeth.

well. the sharpest hook you can get. there is really no way you can catch them every time. they are very allusive. so when they bite, let them take it longer than usual, then jerk the crap out of it |

tch thUsually when you hook them it's in the bony tooth area, they don't hook well. If successful catching one do not net it cause they'll de-thread a net. i catch them in lake Champlain area on leopard frogs while catfishing. |

Back when I used to keep tropical fish I aquired a longnose gar. My buddy that owned the shop had gotten it really cheap from someone( I now know why). I thought it was cool so I bought it. When i arrived home I had to figure out what aquarium to place it in. The fish was only about 12" long but I knew he could eat some of my fish. I placed him in a 70 gallon with some ciclids that looked to be of a safe size and bought some feeder guppies. well the first time I feed him he slowly moved into position and recoiled like a snake and them lunged foreward to grab the guppy lighning fast. I grabbed the camcorder and shot some footage and had to play it back slow motion to see what was going on. It was interesting to see how fast they were. eventually he finished off all my other fish. I would come home from work and he would have a big bulge in his stomach and a few more fish would be missing. I finally gave him away.
Any way I can see how these predetors could stip your bait. that combined with their tough jaws I am sure would make them a challenge to hook.

About the only time I would hook and bring one in is when they've completely swallowed the bait, so basically gut hooked. These fish can torpedo as snakey as any pike. What's also difficult is that they often take off and jump when they get hooked. When they don't take off and jump, they're just like pulling squirmy dead logs in the water. |

take a steel leader and a shot section of cotton made rope. fold the rope to a even length and fasten the leader in the middle. now un braid the two sections. troll that set up slowly behind your boat. when he hits the rope it will tangle up in his teeth and you got him.

The gar lures we made when I was a teenager in the 60's was wrap tying a 4" piece of white nylon rope to a 1/0 hook. Paint varnish onto the wrap tie to secure it, then unravel the rope. Cast along the surface and jerk it like a minnow. As stated above, the rope will tangle in the gar's teeth and they can't throw the lure. You don't really need the hook for gar fishing, you could just tie to a cut off hook shank, however you may get a strike from a bass or crappie, then you'll be glad you have the hook. Happy fishing. It's a rare occurrence when I catch gar. There isn't alot of them where I live. Sometimes I catch them by accident with bass lures.

I have found that nylon rope works better. I have a special bait rig set up just for longnose gar. It is made up of a 6-9inch steel leader with a 1ft section of freyed nylon rope tied tightly around the bottom swivel then attach a hook and bait the hook with fresh beef liver |
