A jon boat is a good choice if your fishing shallow waters, bayous and such they can get in places a bigger boat or a deep vee cant if your fishing big waters the ride can be a little rough. A good addition if you go with a jon boat is a good push pole you can get into and out of weedy bays and through shallow where you cant use your motor.

A jon boat is a great choice for shallow water, but the part of the intercoastal that I am familliar with might get a bit rough. If you are in a part of the waterway that doesn't see a lot of traffic you should be OK. Tom

First off it depends on what you mean as inter-coastal area! Down in NJ,Del,MD & NC coastal area is very rough and high traffic. Then you get into the flats which is mud and small channels! Well for coastal area and just in the outside of the flats you would need is 14' to 18' Semi- V hull and have at least a 35 hp and make sure you use your PFD's. Then you have the Flats saw grass small channels, here you could use a Jon Boat! Lot of people call a Jon boat a V-hull and a flat hull. As a boater and owner of Jon boats and semi V's they are different! But a Jon boat size I wold recommend a 14' - 16' and a 25hp for a 14' and the 16' use a 35hp!
One more thing since you was a kayak you really didn't have to worry about the tides! You don't want to get stuck in the flats in low tide with a large boat and don't try to get out on the mud, you'll be up to your neck i mud! I use to trap and hunt on the these 4 states I was writing about. If you need anymore information, I would contact your Coast Guard and your local Wildlife officer's!
