Maybe it is time for an article on the asian carp problem. I see an awful lot of misinformation floating around, here in the forums and elsewhere. Panic and bad information will not solve this problem or even keep it from spreading. Tom |

I`ll second that one. Here in the Great Lakes region it would be good to hear some educated folks opinions on the possibilities that may or may not be coming.
Some of the videos I`ve seen of waters infested with them is frieghtening. |

There was a terrific article in Great Lakes Angler a few months ago, I have a copy but hesitate to post it due to copyrights. It may be available on the GLA web site, it would have been the Feb or March issue. Written by a PhD from the University of Michigan Great Lakes Fishery Lab. Worth the read. Tom |

If you're a fan of River Monsters, one episode he was examining snakeheads and went off on a tangent on other invasive species. He was on the Illinois River near Havana, IL looking at Asian carp. As the boat approaches they got spooked and their natural defense is to jump away from their predators. They were jumping out of the water and one actually jumped so far and high that it hit the host in the head standing at the front of the boat. http://animal.discovery.com/videos/...ttack.html |

I agree with Tom. we don't have the problem here in utah yet but it would be nice to know the facts. Personally I feel that people tend to lumb info on all carp species together. It obvious to me that common carp and these asian carp. we have tons of common carp in some of our waters and when you run through a group with a boat they do not jump out of the water. also from what i understand asian carp don't take bait to often. So I would like to know more info on the subject.

Is the Clark's connected to the Ohio or Mississippi? I have been following this subject and this is the first report I have heard from Kentucky other than Mississippi reports. Any info you can provide would be appreciated. Tom |

Seeing your knowledge seems to be first hand.......can you tell us more about what effects you have seen happen because of these fish? Other species still there in numbers to catch? Only what your eyes have seen please.

Just an update- the IlDNR has been working to keep these critters out of Lk Michigan and the latest effort was to poison a stretch of the Little Calumet river. Although 100,000 lbs of dead fish were collected, no asians were found. I suppose this is good news, time will tell. The Little Calumet is one of the connecting waterways between the Ship Canal and Lk Mich. Tom |

Hello All: I wanted to let you know that asian carp is the topic of an upcoming Research Update column from Dr. Schramm. Plus we're tracking down details on a program that could result in a pretty unique commercial use for the carp. |

glad to see alot of discussion on the ASIAN carp problem, and cheers to river monsters for putting it out there for a national audience,i live here in maryland we do not have the carp problem but we do have the snake head and it seems to be getting worse, and every one that me and my freinds catch become garden fertilizer which they seem to be really good for |

I missed the reports on the carp today, I was out fishing the Chicago lakefront. I am sure the morning papers will have a full report. The only good news on this front is that it now seems unlikely that these carp will be able to reproduce in Lk Michigan. It is bad enough that they have about taken over the Illinois River, a population in the lake would be a disasster. Tom |

It is a bit upsetting that an asian carp has made it into Lk. Calumet. This lake is directly connected to Lk Mich. I doubt that closing the locks will stop this, I have heard that there is an underground channel between the ship canal and a lake that bypasses the locks. If so, allwe can do is hope that the asians find it difficult or impossible to survive in the lake. (Great Lakes Angler of a couple months ago quoting a researcher at the University of Michigan) When I hear more, I will pass it along. Tom |

Being a Chicago area fisherman who gets in his time on the big lake, I try to stay on top of this and will continue to update when I have solid, science based information to share. I just hope the PhD from University of Michigan is correct and these critters will be unable to reproduce in a lake environment. Tom |
