In a state I was visiting for fishing, I saw something I thought was unethical.  I saw people snag fishing with big sinkers and tandem huge treble hooks.  At first I thought these people merely snag bottom, but eventually after an extensive tug of war, the would pull a fish in.  I saw the fish they snagged were huge, easily over 20 lbs and some well within 30 lbs.  They beat them up with a billy stick.  Some others stab repeatedly these fishes with their knives.  Then in the end, they dump them back into the water.  This appear to me like an act of prejudism against big carp.  I don't understand some people but after spending more time reading the state's regulation book, it was a perfectly legal way to do so.  I guess it's a different kind of way for carp fishing.   Maybe something I will probably try, next time I visit this state again.  It's a good thing I kept my mouth shut when I saw this and kept an open mind.

In Ohio it is legal to snag any forage fish. But killing them after? Why?

Unless you are planning to harvest the fish, why would you snag? Returning the carcass to the water? Both questionable activities in my mind. There are situations where the removal of certain species is desireable but the carcass should be properly disposed of at the least, or put to some kind of use (fertilizer) even better! Tom

Those people could get a hefty fine if they are to be caught! I don't think I've heard of anyone hating carp so much!

Carp fishing is obviously a very touchy subject. While some species of carp are desirable and beneficial in certain waters, they can also overrun a body of water and become destructive. Any lake has a certain biomass that it can support and some species of fish can strip a lake clean and basically leave it at least temporarily sterile. It is probably better to not critisize a technique until all the circumstances are known. BTW, I try to spend my time fishing rather than watching TV, and when I do get rained out I'll watch the Babe before some cartoon show.  Tom

Some people like carp, some people hate them. Everybody has their own personal views.
