I'm planning a trip to Lake George around the third week in July and I was wondering what species are most prominent in the lake around that time, as well as what lures work best. I've heard online that there is a lake-within-a-lake thing goin on and I wanted to know what the deal was with that, like how deep is the divide and what species to find on either level. Any advice would be much appreciated.

That time of year you are most likely to haul in some nice smallmouth. What part of lake George are you planning to go to. You might be able to catch some nice Lake Trout if you have the proper equipment.

Thanks for the advice, wellsley. I'll probably be goin to the southern part of the lake, anything good around there? Also, what constitutes the "right equipment" for lake trout?

The Lake Trout that time of year will most likely fairly deep. So you need to fish deep. If it is calm enough you can jig. If you have downriggers you can troll deep. If not you can use leadcore line. Dipsy divers will get down a ways. Trolling sinkers. Downriggers will get you where you want to be and this time of year but you can jig all the way to the bottom in more than 100 FOW with a nightcrawler or curly grub.

And for a real challenge... you can fish for Landlocked Salmon as well. Now it will be a challenge finding and catching the Salmon, but if you succeed, it will be worth it too. Again you will want to fishing the Salmon with leadcore or preferably with downriggers.

Smallies definately; it's also stocked w/atlantic salmon. Johnson spoon flashers work well for both lakers and salmon.
