I dont know if it is a fluke, or a mutation, or something.... but in the lake i fish at, i have caught a fish that looks to be a mix between a largemouth bass and a bluegill. to be specific, it looks like a largemouth bass but with blue streeks on its face. ill take pictures the next time i get one. I know its not possible, but it is quite interesting.

Where are you located? If you are fishing warm southern waters I'm thinking some kind of South American chiclid  species. How large are these fish? A photo would definately help.

Ran across your note.  I live in South Georgia.  When I was growing up we use to catch a fish that seldom got over two pounds and as kids we were led to believe it was a cross between bluegill and large mouth bass--never heard any different.  We called them "Warmouth Perch" and they were good to eat.  Caught most of them on small craw fish mostly in black water in Cypress swamps and lakes.
A number of exotic fish have been released in Florida lakes and streams   Most of them are related to Oscars who have grown too much trouble for aquariums.  They are very aggressive eat other fish in tanks.  Looking forward to seeing pictures.  Good luck and good fishing.  Uncle Tom
I built my own lure company as a young man--thus the name UncleTomsJigs. It grew so well I decided to give it up and go fishing with family, friends and especially grand children. I became disabled as a United Methodist Pastor IN 2002 and retired here in Coastal Georgia on a 10 acre lake where I continue to fish despite my disabilities. My wonderful wife and I enjoy fishing together. God has blessed us in so many ways and we pray the same for you. I am excited about having so many new friends all over this great country.

The three types of sunfish with bigger mouths that can often be confused as a cross breed of a sunfish and bass are: Rock Bass, Warmouth, and Green Sunfish.

The Rock Bass particularly looks like a cross of a Smallmouth bass and a bluegill.  Red eyes, black spotted pattern on body, smallmouth bass cheek streak-like pattern.  Body really begins to look more like a bass when it gets to be about 12+ inches.

The Warmouth looks like a cross of a Smallmouth and a pumpkinseed. Usually has orange belly and lots of black blotches on body sides and a very similar smallmouth cheek streaks pattern.  I think the body of this one will always kind of resemble a sunfish.  I've only caught one so far.

The Green Sunfish looks like a cross of a Largemouth bass and a Bluegill.  This one usually has some blue streaks across it's cheeks.  Typical green back and sides and white bottom, maybe some broken blue streaks towards the tail.  Body begins to look like a bass when it gets to be about 6+ inches.  Well the body kind of always look like a hybrid between bass and sunfish.

I really don't know what it is without a pic, but your best bet is a Green Sunfish. If that lake is in a southern state it could possibly be one of those introduced cichlids.

Alright guys...lets clear this up once and for all! That pic ol' Bob posted is a green sunfish....here is the same pic again...from a sunfish identification site!

This next one is a warmouth...similar...but you can see the differences.

Last...but not least...we have a rock bass. Again, similar, but not the same.

While these guys all have differences in appearance...they have one thing in common. They don't call 'em PANFISH for nothin'!!

That fish that SlipperyBob posted is the exact fish that I have been asking about. I live in PA and on PA Fish Comm. website, it says that it is common for Green Sunfish to hybridize with other sunfish such as bluegills and pumpkinseeds. The picture on the website shows the green sunfish having no blue. Do you think it is a green sunfish or a hybrid?

Definately a Green Sunfish. I've caught so many this year that there is no doubt in my mind.

Bass r in the bream family includes rock bass and all sunfish it is possible 4 them to cross, but offspring r infertile. I fish in the Hudson River (Champlain Canal) where the bass and sunfish come in many shades and colors. Talk about wierd i catch 3#bass )largemouth(w/bigger mouth than a five#er.

Unless formed by experimental chromosome mixing in a genetic lab, a hybrid between a Largemouth Bass and a Bluegill (or any other species of "sunfish") would be impossible.  Geneticists can do many strange things, so possibly some time in the future, a hybrid may be created.
