I used to catch them while catfishing in the Red River in Shreveport Louisiana. They like a gob of worms or clams fished in the bottom. They are usually in strong current and you'll need a heavy duty rig with heavy weight to catch them. Your spelling is correct. For now I think your question should have been posted in the Exotic and Unusual  Species forum.

I think a lot of known sturgeon tactics are based on the white sturgeon.  Fast currents and heavy weights is pretty much the norm for it.  For the lake sturgeon variety, they tend to favor a slower current.  They generally like to pick things up from near bottom, but the larger ones will usually suspend several feet off the bottom.  Either rig a three way and keep the bait above the bottom or set a deep water slip bobber.  One can also just drop the bait down from the side of the boat and keep the bait off the bottom.  The lake sturgeons like either a muddy bottom or a logjam with lots of wood on the bottom.  These sturgeons may have a very light bite, so just enough weight to get your bait to where you need it will be enough.

JoelW, where you from? I am not sure about eastern waters but if your anywere near the west coast your best bet is probably the columbia or snake rivers or possibly spots in California. I plan to take a trip some day to the snake river in Idaho for sturgeon but I think I will use a guide for the first time. Maybe they should change the Gar forum to include sturgeon and paddlefish!

We already have too many topics, and many members just post wherever they feel like anyway. Tom

People don't always think of sturgeon when the think of a "sportfish". Most likely because they are not found all over the country like bass and catfish.
