I need to put new line on my reel and am unsure when to tell I have enough on the reel. I have fished for years but have never had to do anything but fish. I feel like a beginner. Can anyone help me?? Thank you in advance.

The basic rule is to fill the reel to about 1/16 of an inch of the lip. With a spincast reel this can be dificult to determine as you need to keep removing the cover to look in and check line level. When installing line on a spinning or spincast reel, make sure the line comes off the fillere spool in the same direction as it goes on the reel, don't put the spool on a pencil and wind, you will get twist for sure. The pencil works fine with a baitcast reel.

Well if its a spinning reel spool it up to between an 1/8 of an inch to 1/4 of an inch from the edge of the spool.  Any more than that and it will spill of the spool when you cast.

    Hope that helps you out.

    Good luck and happy fishing!

Spooling a spinning reel to 1/4 inch will cost you way too much casting distance as well as slow your retieve speed. I spool to 1/16" and have no problem with spill, besides it is easier to remove a bit of line than to add once the job is done! Tom

I was just going by what someone told me.  I have really only gotten into fishing about a year ago.  My pond is not that big so I don't have to worry to much about cast distance admittingly I have noticed the slower retrieve.  Thanks for the valuable info Pegsguy.  I will put it to good use.
