When I say wade fishing, I am not talking about fly fishing.  That's a whole different thing.  I decided that the best way to fish the shallows of some of the rivers I fish in is to wade.  The shoreline around some of the rivers is surrounded by trees, so it's imposible to fish from the shore and some of the rivers are so swift that I could not cover water affectively from a canoe.  When I wade fish I can cover water in a river from any angle or direction using spinning or baitcasting tackle.  Anyone else do this?

I do a lot of River/Stream fishing around the month of September when the water level are generally low.  Got a few rods about 9' long for that.  In a way I kind of wish I got a special water proof backpack for those extended trips.  Anyway it's always a blast.  I usually try to hike upstream first and then wade my way downstream.  It's too much work fighting against the current.

I haven't done it in years, but when I was a kid that is the only way I had to fish and I loved it. I use to do it like slipperybob go up stream and wade down. I caught many nice smallmouth and largemouth using that method. In those day we didn't have all the plastic worms and spinnerbaits and such, I had three lures a jitter bug for nihgt fishing and two Rapala floating stick baits one silver and one gold and caught more fish than I can count. I kinda miss those days. Now I have a $52,000 bass boat and thousands of dollars in fishing gear and I catch less fish than when I did when wading the creeks, Go figure.

wading is definatly a great way to cover the water and hit hard to reach places. I differ from basbandit and slipperybob in that I prefer to wade upstream. It puts me in a perfect position to cast a spinner or jig for trout and work it downstream with the current. lots of fun in summer and fall with low flows and just a pair of shorts. winter and early spring good also but wader weather.
