I was checking in on another board and read a post about $6 a dozen nightcrawlers. Am I living in paradise or is that a bit above the going rate? Of late I have been paying about half that unless I go to Wal-Mart and hope what I buy is fresh enough to last a day or two. I guess the bottom line is: what is everyone paying for crawlers where they are? Tom

At a gas station near where I live crawlers are $7 for 2 dozen. I rarely ever use live bait, so I have nothing to worry about.
Keep looking for a better deal...TIGHT LINES!

I've seen early season price hike of $5 for a dozen. When well supplied, it's just under $3 in most places and usually +1$ more for special colors.

They dye them like those colored wax worms and leaf worms.

You get green nitro crawlers, bloody red crawlers, and chartreuse yellow crawlers.

A gas station near me was getting $7 for 2 doz til they figured out that the Wal-Mart a mile away was selling the same package for $2.97! Needless to say they didn't sell many worms! Oh yea, the Wal-Mart is open 24/7. Tom

Here in california(lemoore), I buy my worm from a liquor store. They are better quality and fresher than the Wal-Mart offerings. They run $2.75(w/tax) for a Doz large crawlers. The glow in the dark ones run a bit more.

Freshness has always been a problem at my local Wal-Mart but they are always open and I have never found them out of stock. I prefer to buy my bait at a local trout farm/pay lake as everything is fresher, and the help knows me well enough to ask if I am buying for stock or immediate use. If I am buying for stock, they hand pack a fresh dozen for me in bedding rather than the usual dirt, it seems to help them last longer. I still don't pay over $3 a doz. Tom

the local wally world here sells their crawlers at 2.89 for 20........other wise it's 2.75 fer a doz.

i like to have them along because if i can't get any bites on lures, i can always get something on the crawlers.

Stewarts (which is a chain of gas and convient store) are about 3 bucks and are twice the size of wal-marts. They are great for bass or worm rigs for walleye.

If I ever need night crawlers (rare occasions), I can just find them in the woods in back of my house. Also if I need Shiner or Bluntnose Minnows I can set a minnow trap in the pond on the outer edge of the woods. Let's just say I have all nature's fishing resources at my finger tips!

I was up at Strawberry reservoir a few weeks back and they wanted $3 for a half dozen, but most places in Utah they are about 3 to 4 a dozen.

Oh yeah...I just discovered that I can get crayfish and frogs to use as bait from the pond in back of my house.   I don't know about salamanders, though.

I will gladly pay $3 a doz for fresh crawlers. At age 59, the digging and crawling around is just more than I can hack. I have had days after a storm where I could pick up a dozen or more off my drive first thing in the morning. Tom

I can second what rrouse said about utah. seems like most are going for 3 bucks a dozen or so unless you can find a kid down the street that still sells them occasionally. then you can sometimes get them for 2. Personally I would rather just go out and hunt a few myself.

BTW rrouse. check out the utah board. we are having a get together at jordanell sept 18.

Yeah Salmonking. Then there are the ones that run $20.00 each. Not much action to them but by the time you get to use them, you don't really care!!

I believe the last time I bought them they were $2.50 for 18 crawlers @ Coulee Playland Resort. I thought that was a fair price.
