    Hi,

I am going to be camping on the Saint Croix early Aug.  I thought it might be fun to try something different this year and bring my heavy gear.  I cant seem to find any info on Stergeon in the area other than confirmation they are there.  Any info would be a great help.  For one are they even in season and legal to target:?  If so bait, technique depth etc?

    Thanks for any help!

You can't legally fish for or target them until September 4-30. Oct 1-15 is catch and release.

You can use a set up for catfish and accidentally catch one using baits like nightcrawler and cut suckers.

Hi thanks much for the info! I have only fished this area a couple of times. In fact I have very little river experince at all. My thought was it would be fun to bring my heavy gear and go for a big fish. Cat or Musky maybe and if I happen to hook in to a Stergeon that would be fun to see. Any more info you can give me would be helpfull. From what I remember about this area was that it was pretty shallow. I am curious what depth I should look for and what species/technique may be fun this time of year.

    Thanks Bob !

Get a boat and try the main river channel is the best bet during summer. Any deeper holes will do. If water is about 3 feet as shallow, than a 15 feet hole is deep. Sometimes even a cut bank that's only a few feet deeper will hold fish, but there will only be a few and spread out.

Choose a location that has a sandbar or rocky point with changes in water depth and current. That's about the most productive locations.
