Just looking to get a feel for who frequents this forum and ha**** the waters of western md. I have fished most of allegany and garrett county's creeks and rivers and love it up here, but have heard alot about the gunpowder river as well.

The fishing is awesome, really. This late in the year the creeks are pretty tough, but there are parts of the potomac in garrett that stay cool enough to catch trout. Overall, I have caught bluegill, fallfish, rock bass, smallmouth, largemouth, rainbow trout, brown trout, and brookies and a few others here and there.

Hey Monkey and b, Can you guys give me any idea of a good spot to kayak fish up your way? I got some maps of the river (Potomac) up that end. Any help would be great.

    Welcome!

As far as the Potomac in Cumberland, I have to say I don't fish it. There just seems to be too much crap in the water, literally, lol. The river was used for dumping sewage until not very long ago. Personally, I stay above Luke Mill if I fish the Potomac.  The South Branch is terrific for Bass fishing in West Virginia, especially in the Romney area and The North Branch is terrific for Trout fishing anywhere around Potomac Forest in Garrett county and definitely near Barnum where the river is fed by Jennings Lake which keeps the water cool enough to trout fish year round.

BTW, I cruised by the Casselman the other day and there really wasn't enough water to fish! Heartbreaking. I'd like to hit the Savage River sometime soon.

Thanks I'm gonna look a little closere at the spots you've mentioned and if I head up that way I'll hit you up for some fishing and a cold one. If you kayak let me know if not I'll try and borrow one for you. ( I store 2 others at the house)

No Worries. Like I said I store two others plus mine at my house. Sometimes the owners can't get out and let me use them.

Hey ive been wondering about fishing in western, MD myself. Where is the best spots on the savage river ( and other rivers surronding it) to catch brown, brook, rainbow? Is there some sort of park that you can park at? Basically all the info possible on this subject would be soo helpful thanks a lot.

i always fish western md savage river and beyond lol.
there are several areas along savage river but sections of it are artificial only areas . one is from the poplarlick trail head upstream . and from the dam down stream . the tailwaters which i think is watched and protected by trout unlimited ( i think )

You are correct Scott, but it is still a great river to fish.  I never use live bait anymore and really just go for the enjoyment of the fight. If I want fish to take home I can go elsewhere.
