CHEATING IN US OPEN  I know we live in a crazy mixed up world where money seems to tarnish everything, but I was apauled to read where Mike Hart professional bass fisherman from Southern California was caught cheating in US OPEN.  When we put so much care in catch and release it seems Mike figured he could take advantage of catch and release and slip 2 oz. tapered lead sinkers rigged with treble hook into fish in his live well.  Taking advantage of foreign guests in the back of the boat he asked them to the front of the boat so he could rerig in the back.  I think he was banned for life but it puts a bad tag on tournament fishing.  Wonder how many times he has gotten away with his little trick?  Uncle Tom  Gives new meaning to dying of lead poisoning.  What are your thoughts?
I built my own lure company as a young man--thus the name UncleTomsJigs. It grew so well I decided to give it up and go fishing with family, friends and especially grand children. I became disabled as a United Methodist Pastor IN 2002 and retired here in Coastal Georgia on a 10 acre lake where I continue to fish despite my disabilities. My wonderful wife and I enjoy fishing together. God has blessed us in so many ways and we pray the same for you. I am excited about having so many new friends all over this great country.

Tom I have been following this story for some time now and I just read on wa fish a site we have here in Washington and he is banned for life from fishing any tournaments of any kind. I think he should do jail time but they chose not to press charges.

I fish in a pro circut here in the northwest and the tought of cheating has never crossed my mind. In my opinion if you have to cheat to win then your not much of a fisherman or sportsman. If he did it once he has done it before no dought about it. I get really upset when I read about things like this I just want to kick some butt.

Sad truly sad! Breaks my heart when I just think about fishing and how much it has meant to me.  There but for the grace of God goes me.  I can't begin to imagine his embarrassment and pain, especially for his family and all those supporters.  I tried the pro thing for a short time and it was dog eat dog--almost quit fishing because of constant pressure to produce on whatever level you compete--it ain't all "ice cream and cake"!  I just could not handle it--some can.  It is long hard hours of practice and travel--time constantly away from your family--time you can never go back and live over.  I wouldn't trade a few minutes with a child, grand child or wife for all the glory on every circuit in USA.  It's a no win situation--wish you could take the money out of it but that probably would not make a difference either.  I hope this reminds all of us how important NAFC is and fellowship should mean to each of us whether it is on rivers and streams, little ponds and great lakes, inshore or offshore even in these forums.  God help us all to walk a little distance in one another's shoes!  Help us to leave the joy of fishing to those that follow us better than we found it.  Uncle Tom

Tom, I have posted this cheater couple weeks ago,but this wasn't the first one that I posted about cheating. I posted another one back in April 16,2010 ( Cheater gets jail time) pro fisherman Rose. I posted this subject on NC Anglers and the first one and the creator of the website locked it out so no one can respond to it. When I read something about cheaters or something that is important, I'll copy it and paste it on the site I'm putting it on. But one time I had I posted about Raw Sewage spill and I add the place and the reporter whom made this information available for anyone to read. The person basically called me a crook and taking credit for a column that I posted.

Guys don't take this the wrong way it is just an example. In most states if you get caught poching a game anamal and get caught, you can no only be banned from hunting for life , you are also subject to loose your gun, truck, maybe jail time, and be fined thousands of $$$$. So how would this be any differant. I believe the top prize was around $200,000 and this guy decides to cheat and doesn't get caught it is the same as poching in my opinion. The guy got off too easy.

Hi guys i know this post is old, but i'm relatively new to the site and just working my away around the boards. I will chime in here a bit regarding Mike Hart. I have known and fished against him many times, he has been suspected of cheating before but never substantiated. I would have never believed it, he had it all, sponsors up the ying yang articles in top magazines, its a shame that someone would sink to such levels. He is indeed banned form everything here on the west coast, and its probably not safe to even be seen on the local waters for him. The crap of all of this is anyone he ever fished with was now suspect too. They had to take lie detector tests to get back in the circuits and they all passed. It did put a strain on them and their fishing careers. I have been in tournaments where fish cages were found but noone knew who they belonged to. It will catch up to them, you just think it cant actually be someone you know. Scott

I know this is a late post to this thread but I'm a new member. I'm glad to see that Mike Hart got the attention he deserves in this club ezine, hopefully in many others as well. He should have gotten national exposure. The sad part [to me] is that in his being banned from tournament fishing is not sending the proper message. He should also have been charged with felony fraud. In actuality he attempted to steal the thousands of dollars offered in the tournament. He should have been charged and had it put in front of 12 jurors. This would have sent a clear message to anyone else like minded.

Regardless of your personal feelings there is no way he could be, banned for life from fishing any tournaments of any kind.

Only a Federal Court could hand down a ruling like that.

If no charges were pressed and no conviction was made then all he can be banned from by that organization is that organization.  If another organization chooses to ban him then it solely the pervue of that organization.  There are lots of bass orgs in this country both large and small and the have no obligation to follow a ban by any other organization now matter how much BASS or FLW tried to dictate to down hill to the Federations and the local clubs.
