Started one day for me at McDonald's--you know the "golden arches".  I was sucking down a Coke and notice the straw was white with red and yellow stripes.  I had been catching "blues" by the hundreds off the North Jetties between Cumberland Island and South Jetties of Fernandina, Florida.  I usually lost a grub and several layers of skin on my hands from those vicious teeth.  When I got home to my shop I cut the straw half into and run a stainless wire through it with a loop on one end followed a bead to make it solid then put a bead and treble hook on the other end--behold a great lure for catching blue fish and they could not tear them up.  During the next couple of months I shared the idea with friends and they just laughed.  Then I realized--don't know why--but most every fast food joint has a different color straw.  Some had bright red, royal blue, solid white.  If you want you can cut straw to whatever length you want!  I have even loaded them with stink bait for catfish.  Put propeller blades between two beads and trolled them for Spanish Mackerel.  You are only limited by your imagination.  Be careful about using straws from diet drinks--you'll still catch fish but they want be as FAT!!!
Uncle Tom.  I got some more coming later!  What's your tip?
I built my own lure company as a young man--thus the name UncleTomsJigs. It grew so well I decided to give it up and go fishing with family, friends and especially grand children. I became disabled as a United Methodist Pastor IN 2002 and retired here in Coastal Georgia on a 10 acre lake where I continue to fish despite my disabilities. My wonderful wife and I enjoy fishing together. God has blessed us in so many ways and we pray the same for you. I am excited about having so many new friends all over this great country.

Tom I don't use them in that maner but I do ues the clear one's for my wackey rigs. I cut the straw into small pieces about a 1/4 " and slip them over my worm, and run the hook under the straw instead of putting the hook through the worm. and it saves the bait so I can catch more than one fish per bait. this method is great for drop shoting.

My father, back in the third world country would tie little lures from grass reeds. Using colored straws instead of grass reeds is a really cool trick.

Wow Tom!  A great idea!  I have been using deer tail for my blues jigs...This gives me a new idea!  It would be nice not having to take my tying equipment to the shore everytime I wanted to fish for blues!  LOL!
