When I first heard about soap as bait I thought "yea, and I've got this bridge in Brooklyn....." I have since read too many reports of this working and even one posting here about a soap that is made as a catfish bait. Soap used to be made from animal fat, so why wouldn't it work? Tom |

Works really well. As a matter of fact, Last night on River Monsters, they had the fishermen in the congo using live bait and chunks of soap. I have used it a long time ago for fiddlers, but then got into the trophy side and started using live bait.
there was a member of the nafc who used to sell his bait soap. here's a link to his website, not sure if he's still in biz, but well worth the shot to have a look see and see how his works. http://www.catfishbaitsoap.com/ |

When I was in the Air Force at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana, some friends and I decided spend a weekend fishing on Boggy Creek in Fauk Arkansas . We didn't catch a thing. Sunday morning a jon boat comes down the creek loaded with catfish. We asked the guys in the boat how they caught so many fish when we couldn't catch anything and they said if we weren't using Ivory soap we might as well pack up and go home.

cut the soap up use a small saw into small squares or chunks .then dril a small hole just big enough to let the hook through. might work ? or run a section of thread thru the hole and tie the soap to the hook ?? |

you bet if the water is right. My dad use to catch big bluecats using it on the trinity river. it clouds up around the hook and they like it for some reason. |

I've never done it, but I'm thinking using a bait needle and a hair rig, like for carp. |

I read about using Ivory soap for catfish bait as much as 50 years ago, I also remember that they said the fish should be cleaned as soon as possible to prevent the fish from getting a "soap" taste in the meat. |

I will definitely try this. I sort of remember my Dad and uncles talking about this years ago.
