We have seen this sort of post time and time again. This one is different though. I broke my rod while re spooling. I'm pretty sure that is a first. I actually caught a bunch of fish on the member rod before I broke it. I'm not angry, and don't believe the rod is junk. It's not the best rod, but it served its purpose on the water. I just figured all of us could get a good laugh at this. Re spooling? |

Thats too bad friend! I haven't even gotten mine yet but when I do get it I'm gonna be extra careful re spooling it! LOL sorry , but were you watching championship wrestling as you were respooling or what? Dukes of Hazard marathon ? God bless you brother Fred could you please elaborate on this a little more cuz I'm having a hard time picturing how you broke it re spooling. |

Fred, I not making any accusations about how you re-spool your line, but I have to ask. Did you have the rod in together or just one piece. I had broken one of my old rods, back in the day that I was re-spooling my reel and didn't realize that the tip broke off while I was winding the reel. Later I found out that, if I just use my butt reel handle rod and use the 1 eyelet to use during the re-spooling. I have not broken a rod since. So if you have just used the reel butt rod it takes the stress off the tip. Just wondering! Dennis |

To be honest i have never heard of anyone brake one of their rods from re-spooling, how did this end up happening?

It wasn't anything major. I had the rod all put together. I was keeping tension on the spool with my thumb. I applied a little pressure to the spool, and the tip snapped just below the last eye on the rod. I re spool all my reels like this, and that has never happened before. I found it funny more than anything else. I have been working out lately. LOL! |

Sounds like a heck of a deal, Fred. I've never managed to break any of my poles while respooling and i'm sure you shouldn't feel so bad because i'm sure you aren't the first. Either way, it's good for a laugh. Hope I have better luck when I get my membership pole.

If you go back through the old posts about these rods breaking, this is fairly typical. Rod snaps just either side of the first guide below the tip under little or no pressure, sometimes after landing numerous fish. I have heard reports of Shimano replacing the top half of the rod N/C when contacted directly. Tom |

Welp, I have caught many, many fish with my lifer rod & reel without a problem...I count my blessings! Fred, sorry ta hear about your rod...Tom, you are correct about where most of the rod tips break. I would think a quality control person for the company that makes them would be interested in the remarks made by members...At least I would like to think so! |

Haven't received my life member rod yet but on the issue of re-spooling the line I use the large spools that the outdoor stores use. ( I won't say how many rods and reels I own but my wife says too many and use more than one spool of line a year) I built a bracket a inch wider than the spools it is U shaped. I used a 1/2" bolt and mounted springs to each side of the spool to help keep even tension on the line when re-spooling. Also you can tighten the nut on the end of the bolt to adjust the tension. I also use a lock nut behind the first nut so they don't come unscrewed while winding your line. I mounted the whole thing on a 2'x2' piece of 3/4" plywood so it would stay in one place while winding the line. If you had a free space on the wall it could be mounted there also and probably work better. |

That sounds like a great idea! I also (according to the wife) have too many combos but I use so many different tests and types of line that the bulk spools are not practical for me. A big spool for me is the 1/4 lb. spool of 6# mono that I use on my loaner rods and to respool the neighborhood kids' reels. I will pass on your idea to my buddy. He has a 30' twin on Lk Mich that we salmon fish from and he routinely respools about 10-12 reels with approx. 400 yds of braid each every year. Tom |

I broke the top 1 1/2 " off of mine while trying to bust loose a lure snagged on a log. After reading ya'alls other experiences...I gotta believe that the blanks had a defect in them to begin with. JMHO |

I have only been a life member for a short time and haven't gotten the rod yet, but have everything else. I'm really happy with the club and look forward to getting the rod. If it busts on me , I probably got an uglystick or two that Shimano reel will look real good on. LOL |
