I just bought a house with a small pond full of catfish. The problem is I don't know whta kind the are. They have sharp needle like dorsal and fins and are hard to handle without getting stabbed. What kind are they?

Almost all species of catfish have dorsal and pectoral spines. A picture with a size reference would help. Tom

Do they have silver sides (some having black blotches as well)?  If so, they are Channel Catfish.  Are they Brown or Olive colored?  If so, they are probably Bullhead.

It's hard to upkeep channel cats in a small pond full of them, unless it's super oxygenated with constant fresh water flow or aeration system.

The pond I regularly fish in near my house has alot of good sized bullhead.  I've caught several in that pond that would have qualified for a Master Angler award (14" minimum) if I would have gotten them photographed.
