I fish mainly inshore saltwater and was wondering which hook is better circle hooks or J hooks? I use the J hook now but have been hooking many small trout in the gills and fear that they may not survive.

Standard J hooks will have the highest hook up percentage. They however are not always the most reliable for staying hooked.

With circle hooks there is a less chance of the fish getting hooked in the throat and gills therefore less chance of fish kills. Circle hooks are designed to rotate into the jaw of a fish and they pretty much hook themselves.

Circle hooks are now mandatory in many salt water fisheries. While they don't eliminate gut hooking, they do reduce it making the small loss of hooksets acceptable to me. Tom

I usually fish freshwater.  The only time I use circle hooks is when I fish for catfish, because they tend to try to swallow the hook.
