Interesting! I fish Lk. Michigan for salmon and our fishery is a bit different but there is one constant when dealing with Chinook or King salmon. These fish pefer a water temp between 46-52 degrees and will always seek that. Here in the midwest we have had some very strange weather this summer, even though the air temps have been high, west winds have kept cool water near shore and the fish have also stayed inshore. Not following the water temps in the Pacific I can't speak to any pattern off California but would bet that water temps off your home port are a bit higher than normal, keeping the salmon out of their normal range. Our King Salmon fisherys in S.E. Alaska started out about average, which was better then last year. However about the middle of July, they all but dissappeared, but 2 days ago, the charter boats started bringin limits for thier clients again.
However, we haven't had the Coho run that we have grown to expect. Were in the past, limits of 6 were the norm. This year the lodges are lucky if they can come in with 3--4 fish to the boat. Our water has been staying at a pretty constant 52 degrees, The durn cohos' just aren't here! Sitka, north of us is doing better then we are, but still not what they expect.
