I'm a big Pflueger fan I own 12 of them right now. Last Friday my wife and I were smallmouth fishing. She and I both were using our Pflueger Patriarch's. I made a cast and the reel expolded.  I haden't noticed that the thumb screw had came loose that holds the left side plate on, and when I made my cast the lure went about 3 feet the side plate went about 25 feet and sank in 60 foot of water (bye bye side plate) and the spool landed on the deck of the boat. I was in shock for a moment, and then pissed at myself for not checking the thumb screw. I had never had this happin before. All will be fine soon  the reel is on it's way to Pflueger for repair.

P.S. We did manage to catch some nice fish.

No Never. That got your attention though. Good thing you only lost the plate.

As a Reel repairman since 1982, I have seen many reels that "expolded" or actually they lost parts.

Man people think reels only need lubing and line. = NOT  True.

I have seen or replaced many front and back covers improperly put on that feel off.
Reel handles that fell off because the nuts came loose.  Bait clickers/alerts that fell out.  Even reels dropped and then broke at the reel foot. And other missing parts too.

One off the saddest things I ever seen   was a guy who put sun screen on his daughter and forgot to wipe his hands, then picked up his rod and reel. Cast it & it slipped completely out of his hands,  and flew about 40 ft from his boat, and sank in approx. 60 ft of water.

Remember to wipe those hands after applying Sunscreen.

scasteel I do take good care of my reels. I clean and relube twice a year. I change line mid season and again before the new season starts. I fish in one of the largest Bass Circuts on the West coast so I need to make sure all my equipment is in tip top shape. It was just a mistake on my part. I was so into catching all those huge smallmouth I forgot to check the thumb screw that holds the side plate on. My fault, not because of poor upkeep. And yes Fred it got my attention. LOL

I have an  5 ft. Ultralight Pfleuger Trion that I love to use beacuse it is easy to stow in the car.  It is there all year long.
It has seen many fishing days and has brought in some six + pound fish in it's day Bass and Trout. ( I just used it today)
The only problem that I have with it is the locking screw that holds the reel on comes loose a lot.  I have to tighten it all  the time.  A couple times it came loose and as I casted, the reel went flying.  Thank God the line was still strung on the rod and it didn't break.   Of course this only happens when someone is looking, making me look like a rank ameteur.

Stealthfisher those are some nice browns. I own 10 Pflueger reels and they have never let me down except the one I forgot to tighten the side plate screw on. good thing is I sent it back to Pflueger and they replaced the plate and a few other things and didn't charge me a dime. Now that's customer service.

    That's great Harry,
This is the second one of this same rod for me. After I broke the tip and handle  ( because it is always in the back of the car)   I had to buy another one.   It's not high end and it's not a cheaper one, but the only end that matters is the end with the fish on it !

    Nice Trout  huh?    Thanks.
Caught in Carney's Point New Jersey  at Schadler's Sand Wash.
Are these Brown Trout or are they Brook Trout ?  I alway get confused.
I thought Brookies have that white and black lining on their bottom fins and  a hint of orange and were a bit more speckled than their Brown cousins?
You gotta love the shot with the fish and the rod that caught it.

This one I think is a Brook Trout, at least I think so.  It kind of lost some of it's orange at the bottom,at least. Still tasted good.   What do you think ?

If they will fix it at no charge, all the better, but if not, and you have the mechanical ability, I've ordered parts form this web site http://anglerspartscan.com/catalog/ and had pretty good luck.

Something we agree on! I too am a big Pflueger fan. My favorite is a President on a Fenwick HMX crankbait rod. I can toss big crankbaits all day with that thing. Keep an eye on those screws.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!
