We all have this reel if your a life member. Well I just started to have this problem with the drag. I have set the drag to have the fish little play but not to run all the spool out. So I tightened the drag more and the drag still let the line pull out very easy. So any idea's why the drag is do this, and how to fix the problem. Dennis |

One question: Do you loosen the drag between (delayed) outings? |

I have about a dozen Shimano spinning reels in the same price category as the Sienna and they all use a common spool. I have yet to experience a problem like this. The only time I had something even close happen, it turned out the line was wound too loosly(my fault) and was tightening up. I would suggest taking the drag apart and checking for contaminants. The drag washers are in the spool and can be removed after carefully removing the spring wire retainer. Pay attention to the order that the parts come out in! If all else fails, new spools are available. Tom |

I have two Shimano Stradic reels that I have had for over fise years, and have never had any drag problems at all with them. I can tell you this, any time the teh reel is not in use the drag should be backed off to were there is no resistance at all on the system. This applies to spinning and baitcasters. If left tightened the drag washers will eventually set a memory in the tightened position, and no mater how tight you make it the drag will still let the line out. I learned this the hard way. ruined a couple by not loosening the drag. Harry |

Oiled felt drags may just need some fresh oil to give it some more life. I wouldn't hesitate to use some of Shimano Drag Star Grease. |

Mine says Samuri 2500 and drag washers should be replacable as long as someone still has parts. |

Is it really worth putting $20 worth of parts into a $30 reel? A replacement spool might be available from a source other than Shimano (last time I bought a Shimano spool it was about $20) |

It's probably your drag discs/washers need to be replaced or cleaned. Most problems occur with the drag when anglers dont properly set the drag. You should always have some play in your line...When your drag is over tightened...over time it will "freeze" up and will be useless...I would open it and inspected the drag discs...clean or replace if needed...on that Shimano reel, it should only be a few dollars for new discs...Remenber to clean your reel after each use...with fresh water, not lake water and definatley not saltwater...and when you put your reel away for the day, loosen the drag so it doesn't form a memory, like basbandit said. After each season has ended..I breakdown all my reels and and clean them, then oil and lube so there ready to go next spring... |
