I fish for gar and catfish in a bayou behind my house and yesterday spotted something unusual.  A fish that looked like a gar hit the surface. that in itself is pretty common but this one was jet black. first i thought i was mistake but about 20 min later i saw it again. Has anyone else seen something like this and if so what is it.

    Perhaps a color mutation?

The color of a fish depends partly on its climate.  For example, a bass in clear water will usually be darker than a bass in cloudy water.  It might be a color mutation, but I don't think it's likely.

Gar as well as carp and other fish can exhibit extreme melanism making them so black even the ventral half of the body (belly) is black. It's simply too much black pigment, and might be from too-shallow water with too much sunlight, genetics, and other natural factors.
