Another reason for line twist on a spinning reel is that the line was spooled in the wrong direction. Putting line on a spinning reel (usually counter clockwise) off the bottom of the spool while laying flat. the line should be spooled on a spinning reel in the opposite direction it was put on the spool. Baitcast or level wind reels should be put on the reel while spool is facing you.

Actually I heard that a lot of pros spool up baitcast reels from the bottom of the spool with it on a spoke to spin. You want to reverse the line coil onto the baitcasting reel. So it helps to clear out the line coil memory.

Many of the standard spool has an opening on the side of the box, just so one can spool up line from that opening. Put rod tip into that hole and crank away.
