so i was stupid and didnt pay attention to my ratio on my merch 115 and put way to much oil in. i am mechanically inclined. just unfamiliar with marine applications.drained fuel and put back propper mix, have cleaned carbs and keep replacing plugs. the cyclinders seem to be loaded with oil. have blown out with compressor but still oily. if i mist starting fluid in carbs it will atempt to start ( shake and sputter had it back fire twice. should i pull fuel pump and clean? have heard to pul plugs and crank to press out oil in cylinders? is there anything else i should clean? any help to save me money from my stupidity would be great.thanks for your help

I would suggest removing the fuel lines at the carbs if possible, and flushing as much of the lines as possible. After doing that, remove the plugs and crank the engine with the throttle wide open like you were starting a flooded engine. Clean or replace the plugs and you should be good, it may smoke a bit for a while, but a good run under a bit of load should clear it up.

Believe it or not you can't put tooo much oil in your fuel. When you buy a brand new motor the dealer will dubble the mixture for the brake in period.I bought a new Yamaha a few years back, even though it was a direct oil injected motor the dealer still put a quart of oil in the fuel tank. I thought he was nuts. The motor smoked more that it should but ran fine.

If your's is sputtering and backfireing it sounds like you have a timing problem.

Heck, in days past they were 16:1. You didn't say just how rich you made it, but unless your totally upside down on the gas-oil ratio it should run.

Too much oil will keep a motor from running, especially an older motor with worn spark plugs. A newer motor in the 115 range one would think would be oil injected, this tells me it is an older motor and a bit of wear will magnify any problem! Tom
