The Three Oakes Recreation Area is supposed to open late Sept, early Oct. I am a bit put off by the proposed $10 entry fee for non-residents. I will send you a PM on this. Tom

Three Oakes Rec area is now scheduled to open at 6:30 AM on Fri, Oct 1. Contrary to initial reports, the only non-resident fee will be a $5 parking fee. This of course is subject to change next year when the beach and other amenities open for use. Tom

To the best of my knowledge, if you want to fish from a boat you must rent. Electric motors only and the fishing will be catch and release only at least through 2011. For more info, try  www.NWHerald.com   or the City of Crystal Lake web site. Three Oakes Red area is not part of the CL park district but is a city owned property. Tom

I had one more piece of information come to light this morning. Seems that the only live bait permitted at Three Oaks is worms purchased on site. No bringing in your own bait! Also, turns out that ice fishing will not be permitted. Tom

Has anyone made it down to Three Oaks/Vulcan Lakes yet? I don't trust media reports. Tom

I was told they will increase to $10 parking fees. If anyone plans to go there, BYOB! (Bring your own bait) Worms there are around $4! And you need to stay on the paths next season. The police are going to start cracking down on people for people going off the paths next season. To many people go there. As a fisherman, you will need to rent one of there boats if you are seroius. If you fish the shore you will have kids throwing rocks in the water or something other thing that people do to scare the fish. They got nice pike and bass. I got 13 pounds of bass in 3 hours. It costly to fish but its a great place to take your kids or girlfriend.

It is my understanding that you must purchase your bait at the concession stand. I live almost within walking distance and I doubt I will bother fishing there. Just seems to be too many stupid rules like a boat has to be returned after 2 hrs with an additional 2 hr renewal. Tom

I know they say you must purchase worms there, but what are they going to do? Stop you and check your worms? They told me some stupid crap about keeping the lake clear from types of disease so they want you to buy their "clean" worms. I guess they think thier worms are purebred or something. A worm is a worm!! That lake does have stupid rules. You know some parts of the lake you can't fish,  that is crazy!! Oh, FOR ANYONE GOING TO TRY TO SNEEK IN VULCAN LAKES TO TRY TO ICE FISH     DON'T DO IT!!!  Not only will get a huge fine, but vulcan takes a long time to freeze and there alot of areas on that lake that will be very unsafe! Its not worth it.

Anyone out there interested in a get together this spring in the Crystal Lake area? Due to the situation at Three Oaks, I would suggest The Hollows but will accept any suggestions. If you have never fished the Hollows, the water is extremely clear and the fishing is tough. There are some really good sized bass in the lake as well as a good population of channel cats. Tom
