Are you fishing for catfish or carp? These fish do tend to adjust and sort of learn steal bait by nibbling lightly. You just gotta give it a good hook set and then see if you've got fish on. Sometimes you have to change bait because they kind of get use to one type of bait.

so many things contribute to this.....time of year does play a factor in....maybe the bait your using is not one you should be using this time of year. like leaches is a great bait to use during the summer--and yes you can catch fish on them now,but they are not hit as often or as hard--
the time of day might also have something to do with it....
..what are the weeds looking like in this pond.......
how far north or south are you living......
    ect.....ect.....

I think fish do wise up as you put it though.  Thats why sometimes an old style lure that has seen better days will become usefull again, in time.  Kind of like clothing styles, retro looks, etc

    lmao.......ram

even thou fish will eat crayfish all year long. but its getting that time of year when it seems harder to catch a fish on them. part of it is....here in northern climit, crayfish have slowed down and seeking a hole in the mud to get throu the winter. also they have stop growing so they are not molting out of their skin as much.......a fish will not turn its noise to a soft shell crayfish but might have its doubts with one that has a hard shell
