I was wonding if anyone knows of any good places to fish for "oddball" species in southern lower Michigan. When I say oddball, I mean suckers, carp, burbot, bowfin, and every other fish species that isn't usually targetted. I know this is a vague topic, but I couldn't think of any way to word it in a way that would make it easier to answer. Any info would be greatly appreciated! |

for the carp and suckers, just about any river that goes by ya. almost all lakes and ponds even some rivers will have bowfins and as for the burbots, i only now of a couple of places to get them in michigan and thats in the big lakes.....mostly lake michigan and superior. burbots are a cold and deep water fish. the only time a shore fisherman has a chance of catching 1 is just before ice up and just as the ice is leaving the shore around piers and such. the burbot is a winter spawner. they spawn under the ice in shallow water, but live in deep water the rest of the year. i have only caught 1 in my life time and i got that 1 off the st joe pier when i was fishing for browns, right after the ice went out around the piers. remember burbots are great eating, just ugly looking. |

I've seen plenty of people pulling out massive size and numbers of carp by a stream that runs under a bridge out of the north end of Stoney Creek at 26 Mile. It's kind of hard to find, but if you get permission from the landowner, they'll let ya fish there all day. It's wading territory, so it's best to wear a pair of chest highs. Out of that same stream, I've caught Largemouth, Smallmouth, Northern, and the Carp. The Pike and Smallies aren't that big, but the largies and carp asre biggg. All of the fish are easily spooked, so you have to use the current to drift your bait under the bridge. All the fish I've caught there hit a lure like I've never seen before with such tenacity. Some of the best fights I've ever had in my whole life of fishing. It's truly beautiful out there. I've actually had a few does walk past me while I was fishing there. Good luck to ya, and if you ever want to go there, I'll give you better directions. |
