I was fishing about a month ago for Bluegill off a dock and I spotted a bright orange carp! I am assuming that somebody released it into the lake when it got to big for a home aquarium or pond. Since then I have spotted several others, including one Goldfish. I am wondering if anyone has seen or caught an "aquarium" fish in waters that you fish in. |

Last month I saw a kid catch a goldfish that probably weighed about 2 or 3 pounds.

I used to see a number of KOI swimming with the schools of carp being fed at the Kathrines Landing Marina on Lake Mojave. I have seen big goldfish in Big Bear Lake and some others in SoCal., these were probobly the survivors of leftover illegal bait being dumped in the lake. |

Yep bad news. there could be several reasons why these Koi/goldfish or any other aquarium species are found in our waters. obviosly folks releasing them into the water is a big factor but also there is the possibility of fish escaping from a garden pond in a flood or being carried away by a predator and escaping such as some type of bird. even some areas that have outdoor tropical fish farms sometimes experience some escapees. I have seen goldfish and heard of people catching Pacu's(mistaked fora Pirahna) but never hear of anyone catching a plecostimus bass or bass. Brian |

Brian, the Plecostimus, is not a bass, or closely related to!! The Plecostumus is a sucker mouth fish from the Amazon region of South America. It is a algae eater, and Aquarium owners buy them to keep the algae off thier tank walls. There are over 250 species of Plecotimus, of which the Hypostimus is the largest. Reaching a age of 250 yrs., 25---28" in length! There are many fish farms in the south that have pond built, just for Plecotimus raiseing! With all the tornados and floods that them folks have had in the past few years, not surprised that some are being found in the wild! Allen |

There should be a comma after 'plecostimus'. |
