I was wandering if anyone had a bait they liked to use to catch florida gar? Ive tried lots of things, but lately, my bow has been the most effective way of getting them. |

I'm not much of a gar fisherman, but I've heard that live shiners work pretty well. |

I have seen programs on TV of Aligator Gar fishing on Texas and they were using large chunks of cut bait. |

Here in the southeast corner of Texas, nothing beats finger mullets for gar. Croakers are pretty good too. Good luck with catching the gar. They spook very easily. Tight lines, Salty Dan Orange Texas...in the middle of gar country |

By the way, my gar lure works GREAT with a fly rod. And gar on a fly rod is awesome! |

Wow; a gar on a fly rod! That must be like catching a whale! LOL! Some of the smaller gar caught around here are little 3 foot long nose gar. Some gar caught around here are 5 foot alligator gar! The guys catching them use 3 foot long wire leaders and 30 lb test line. Never heard of them being caught with a fly rod before. It's gotta be AWESOME! Tight lines, Salty Dan Orange Texas |

The gar I caught were in Florida and were long nose. Probably averaged @ 4 to 5 pounds. Still exciting. |

Yeah, I described the rope gar lure in some of the other threads. I used to cast it on a fly rod. WOW! |

i caught gars on live minnows or cut bait, casting crank or stick baits and even on flies Trying to get e hook in them is precisely why you need to use the gar lure I've described in the other gar threads. |

WHEN I FISH IN FLORIDA, I TAKE ONE DAY AND FISH FOR GAR. I USE CUT UP DEAD SHINERS FROM MY BASS FISHING. TIE A PEACE OF PANTY HOSE AROUND YOUR BAITED HOOK. IT REALLY HELPS WITH THE HOOK UPS. ALMOST ANY CUT BAIT WILL WORK. THE PANTY HOSE GETS TANGLED UP IN THE GARS TEETH. I HAVE COUGHT THEM UP TO 45LB. GOOD LUCK |

Never have intentionally fished for gar but once I was fishing in the river below Lake Talquin in Florida for stripers and was having real good luck with a red headed white tail buck tail jig. When I was making them I made a few with pink heads and pink tails. I decided to go through my assortment of bucktails and see if there were other colors the stripers would bite. As soon as I tied the pink one on a huge six or seven foot gar nailded it. Talk about a fight in running water I had one. My biggest problem was once you got one how do you get him off? Good luck and good fishing! Uncle Tom |

| I built my own lure company as a young man--thus the name UncleTomsJigs. It grew so well I decided to give it up and go fishing with family, friends and especially grand children. I became disabled as a United Methodist Pastor IN 2002 and retired here in Coastal Georgia on a 10 acre lake where I continue to fish despite my disabilities. My wonderful wife and I enjoy fishing together. God has blessed us in so many ways and we pray the same for you. I am excited about having so many new friends all over this great country. |

I would think a silver spoon and the original Rapala would work, only problem would be what they would do to the Rapala |

Deer organs work well for me. I keep what most guys leave in the field after harvesting a deer and use it as catfish bait. Works suprisingly well on Gar too. I seem to catch them while fishing for cat in the Ohio river in Southern Indiana. |
