I have an 87 Johnson 88 hp. When I test it out of the water it runs no problem. But as soon as I put the boat in the water the motor will not turn over. When it does start it only runs for a minute (if I'm lucky) then it shuts off. I'm not a mechanic, but I am very good with engines, or so I thought. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I am trying to save myself the money of having to bring it to a Marine shop, as I am a disabled Vet and have very limited funds.

Sounds like you might have a fuel supply problem. Check to make sure the bulb in the fuel line stays firm with the motor running. You could have anything from a clogged fuel filter to a leaking line or connection. A good visual check of the fuel system might be a good starting point! Tom

I had this same motor on a salt water boat I owned. It started fine and ran great, then it started acting up in the same maner you just discribed. I would be running on plane and it would just quit. What it came down to was the fuel line from the tank to the bulb was collaping about 6 inches from the tank and no fuel was gitting to the fuel pump. I replaced it with heavy rubber hose. Problem solved.

thanks guys, I will definitely look at the hose. I have inspected everything when it comes to the fuel, but there is a spot where I cannot see the hose going into the motor. Hopefully this may be the problem. Pegsguy, the bulb stays nice and firm. I have repaced the fuel filter also, I am going for the line next, I may just replace it anyway with higher quality line. Will have update as soon as I have some decent weather. Tomorrow is suppose to be in the low 50's that may be my best chance.

    Tight lines...
