Right on! Time to start looking for a great pattern. Has any "theme" been decided on or is this a tier's choice swap?

Guys,

I don't really care what gets tied or what I tie.  The only thing I was thinking, there has been such a variety in the previous swaps, when it comes time to fish them, you really have to decide on species and location and which of the 2 or 3 that will be successful for that trip.  With a theme or targeted species, you could take the whole box and see how they do in your particular location.  As an avid Steelhead fisherman, that's generally what I tie, but they are not in all parts of the country, so my flies don't get fished by all in the swap.  And when I fish for other species, I have to go through the various boxes to pick out certain ones.  By then, no one remembers what they tied, etc.  I'd like to see the fish caught on the exchange flies, so if we target a species or two, trips can be made with just the exchange flies being fished. But like I said, I don't really care.

I was talking with rod tosser last night in the chat room, and he
told me abt this swap. I have tied a coupla flies before, and
would like to join in this swap. So count me in.

Probably tie a crawfish, but not sure.

As an aside, I usually don't fish with the flies I get in swaps.
I just like to keep them, and try to make my own from them.

Thanks,

Salty Dan

If at first you don't succeed, maybe you shouldn't try sky diving!

I don't tie...but with about 500 different flys of all kinds...I'm sure I could put together a grab bag to donate to the effort if you guys would like it.

My only concerns with themes: 1. Not everybody fishes for the same species, therefore may not be interested in certain patterns (although I do agree that some patterns may appeal to a spectrum of fish), 2. Not everybody has the same tying skill and knowledge. I'd hate to alienate anyone, especially beginners. I myself am a beginner and I relish the challenge of comparing my skills to others. Swaps give us the opportunity to see new patterns and allows us to share ours with others without feeling intimidated. If you want to go fishing with all of yours, that is awesome and we'd all love to see the catch photos. I just prefer to hang on to mine and I actually display them all together by year. Not only am I proud of what I have done, but I am proud of other's creations as well. It is awesome to be included. So let's be careful not to alienate. OR maybe (hint, hint) somebody else can host a themed swap :-) (and if you do, count me in).

So far:
1. TallCrane1 Something that looks like something a fish might eat, probably in a sz. 12 or 14.
2. Rod Tosser
3. Just Dave
4. midkiff1
5. Chris G
6. Ol J.W.
7. StoreyTeller
8. utfisher
9. harrington Rainbow Smelt
10. Salty Dan Crawfish (I will be looking forward to a crawfish pattern Dan!)

We need just two more swappers! For those of you that mentioned specific flies, I will post that, but don't feel obligated to decide right now (cause I haven't decided what to tie myself)!

Woolly buggers sounds good!
Since I had such good luck with pink for crappie this year, I will tie pink ones.

After a quick hook count,I am in with a dozen # 10  Deerhair Crawbugs.Don't let these fool ya, Tied on a 8089 and tail weighted for 5 weight and above, this is a great still water pattern for bass, catfish and the large bluegills. Nail weighted so as to fall level like a crawfish, short strip, short strip then pause.I'll be upgrading these with rubber legs for even better looks and action.

NICE crawdaddies Ol J.W.!!! I hope everyone had a good holiday and got lots of goodies from Santa. I myself got one of those Echo Micro flycasting practice rod thingys. Seems to work well....

We need to beat the bushes for two more tiers. If any of you guys talk to other fellow tiers on the forums here, don't hesitate to send out invites!
