Here is a pic of a whopper crappie my wife caught back in March. She caught this big boy on an ole nightcrawler. It was 16" long and weighed in at 2lb. 2oz.
Warning: In the event of the "Rapture" my boat will be Un-manned.

I've caught crappie (black & white) on nightcrawlers. Didn't think it was that unusual. One of my favorite spots is loaded with crappie that you can get from the dock. I usually deadstick one or two with live bait, and usually two different types (nightcrawler on one, minnow/waxworm on the other), and cast & crank the other with something like a #1 Rapala.
And that is a tremendous crappie, 2lbs is awesome.

I agree with Armstrong. Not unusual at all.
Nice Crappie, though. Your wife must be proud!

I thought it was unusual when I caught a crappie on a nightcrawler intended for catching something else.

Great fish dbarnett. It seems like just about every time I'm trolling crawler harnesses for walleye I pull up a crappie. They're usually pretty good-sized ones at that.
Even if you've been fishing for three hours and haven't gotten anything except poison ivy and sunburn, you're still better off than the worm. - Author Unknown. Matt in Whitewater, WI.

Nice crappie. The problem in Pa. is our lakes are full of blue gills and fish'in with crawlers for crappies is almost impossible as the blue gills won't leave them alone. We have the same trouble fish'in with meal worms, wax worms and etc. I have no problems with catch'in blue gills but about 1 out of 25 is big enough to keep. I hope ya keep on pull'in them big 'uns out.

I have the same problem with 'gills. Most days if I fish with worms I might just as well dump a carton of worms in the lake and go home! Minnows and plastics tend to keep the thieves out of my hair! Of course when I take a young one down to catch some 'gills there is never one to be found! Tom
