Welcome to the forums!
How clear is the water in your pond?
For clear water, I would use natural colors. For murky water, I would use more brighter, less natural colors.

I would try both unnatural and natural colors. See what works for you! |

Also, check out what's swimming around in your pond. If you're seeing bluegills, pick up some lures in 'gill colors. If minnows abound, try some silvery-colored baits. Experimentation is the key. |

The first thing I check out when deciding what color is to check the weather (cloudy or not). On cloudy days I tend to use gold colors and on bright days I use silver. A Strike King Redeye lipless shad has been working wonders for me. For instance on cloudy days I use the "Gold Sexy Shad" and on bright days I have been using the "Chrome Sexy Shad. In the last couple of months I have caught 10 to 15 largemouth bass over 5 pounds and recently caught one that was 12 pounds 8 ounces and back in the early Spring caught one that was 16 pounds 2 ounces. Sad to say I did not get any good pictures on my phone camera. All were caught on Strike King's Red Eye Shad which is similar to lipless Rapala you mentioned. The size of the lure doesn't seem to make a difference--at least so far. I was up in Middle Georgia for Thanksgiving with my Dad (84) and both of us caught several bass between 2 to 5 pounds on same lure. All of the above mentioned bass were caught in ten to twenty acre small lakes. Lake pools are low due to hot summer and lack of rain. My lake is down nearly four feet from normal. Give them a try! Good luck and Good fishing!! Uncle Tom |

Uncle Tom, Nice catch. What state are you catching those monsters in. Here in Michigan I catch numerous Largemouths and Smallmouths in the 2-4 lb. range with a big one 5-6 lbs. I too use the gold colors on cloudy days and silver on the bluebird days. I like the Strike King Sexy Shads in the gold metallic and the silver metallic. I also use X-caliber lipless cranks and alot of spinner baits. I have also found that the bright colors ( whites, yellows, chartreuse and pinks) work best on bright days and the dark colors ( blues, blacks, reds, greens) work best on dark days. I also have found that the larger baits work better in the fall and early winter, smaller sizes in the spring and summer.......Tight Lines.....TheFishman.......

Fishman, I live in Southeast Georgia a few miles from historic Savannah. This gives me access to a number of rivers and the Atlantic Ocean. Actually, not far from where George Perry caught the world record largemouth bass. I have dreamed all my life about that record. People say the next record will come from California, Texas, Florida and of course, Japan. Strange, they seldom mention the rest of the southern states. Personally, I believe it will come from a small lake that has ample bait fish and crayfish with little fishing pressure. Even though the catch and release program has known success, it is hard to get people to release those trophies to get even bigger. I've come to believe some of those five or six pound Northern cousins put up the same battles as their heavier Southern cousins. All in all it is a joy just to share the moments we spend together on the water. Good luck and good fishing! Uncle Tom |

I'm getting a new tackle box and a bunch of soft baits and about 10 lures or so. any suggestions on lures and soft plastics? i havent fished with shads, soft craws, or flukes yet and im definitely stocking up on those. i have heard nothing but good things about those. but tips on what brand/color/type of lure to get is much appreciated! i will upload a picture of the lake i fish at regurally tomorrow if i remember for better suggestions. thanks and merry christmas! |

In a pond, forget the clackin' rap. Go with hula poppers and jitterbugs.
