    I'm a novice at saltwater fishing, as you already know, but I've been reading up on the subject lately.  You can find lugworms and other marine worms in little sand mounds when low tide comes around.  Also, you can throw nets out over schools of herring and shad (after attracting them with chum).

    You can also cast net for shrimp, shad, and other bait fish at the mouth of rivers and small streams that enter the saltwater. In fact, you can be fairly successful at catching flounder, reds, and specs there too. At least here on the Upper Texas Gulf Coast!

    You probably would need to chum in order to keep the school together long enough for you to throw a net over it.

    Sometimes it's easier to catch baitfish using a drag net. First of all you need a second person to work the other end of the net drag it horizontally along the beacch untill a school of bait traps itself between you and the beach one guy stops then just around with the other and drag the school of bait up onto the beach in the net. It works best on sandy or gravel beachs in the back waters of bays usually near the mouths of rivers or streams

    Hello Ralph;

    First off, you need to see if cast netting is legal in your state and area waters. You need to see what kind of fish you can use as bait, such as bluegills, perch, croakers etc. Here, where I live in Texas, cast netting is legal, and netting shrimp is legal, except where I live. From the intracoastal waterway inland, it is legal to fish with shrimp, but if it is live, I would need to produce a bill of sale stating the shrimp were not taken from this area.

    Other bait fish can be netted, such as mullet, shad, and croakers, but non bait fish cannot be used as bait. Of course, each state is different, and most states have special rules for different parts of the state. To be safe, it would be in your best interest to check out your DNR, or licensing facility to see what you can and cannot use.

    As for using chum for casting, we never do it here. We can see the bait fish in the waves, and just cast there. Mostly mullet off the surf, but on the inshore side, lots of shad can be netted.

    Good luck, and hope you learn to cast a net. It is a lot of fun just catching the bait!

    I lived in Houston for about 5 yrs back in the early 80's ; it came a real shock at first to see people netting shrimp out of the surf. There would allmost allways be specs in the same spot and usually concentrate on catching those along with sme reds mostly with jigheads and soft plastic trailers in the shape of a shrimp

    Hello Ralph;

    If you are learning to throw a cast net, then I would say, no, do not cast near jetties. Even if you are fairly experienced, I would suggest not throwing over jetties. Here is the problem. A cast net is a circular net that has weights all around the perimeter. When the net is thrown, it opens to a circle and the weights take it down to the bottom fairly quickly, trapping any fish beneath it. When the draw strap is pulled, it traps the fish in the net, kind of like a tea bag. The net is then retrieved, and it's contents are then emptied and what is wanted for bait, etc is kept, and the rest thrown back. Jetties are usually made of big chunks of rock or concrete, and they don't have a smooth bottom. The net will get caught in the crevices between the rocks and will become tangled, ripped, and torn.

    If it were me, and I was just learning to throw a cast net, I would practice throwing the net over land for a while, just to get the hang of how to cast it until it fully opens most every cast. Then I would practice on some water that had a smooth bottom, without a lot of debris, or structure. You would be surprised at how many bait fish you can catch just throwing from shore, or by wading slightly into the surf to cast.

    I just wouldn't cast over jetties or places that have a bunch of tree branches or rocks along the bottom. Just not worth the expense of buying another net, at least to me.

    Hope that helps some, and good luck with a cast net.
