Once upon a time in a country far away there was a group of anglers that belonged to a fishing club. This fishing club had a web site for the members to share fishing ideas, experiences and thoughts in general. The best thing was that when an angler logged on, the site came up right away, it was easy to post pictures and life was good. Then an evil changeling came along and switched something around on the servers and the happy group of anglers was condemned to a purgatory of dropped posts, slow respose and a multitude of 500 errors. Along came Web Guy Greg who loudly proclaimed "Hi guys, I am here to help you" and he tried really hard.

To Be Continued............

.......And very slowly, bit by bit some of the things that were wrong got corrected. But Web Guy wasn't satisfied and kept bugging the IT guys.........

Actually, I'm thinking of buying IT Guy a case of beer in "advance appreciation" ... LOL! What kind should I get him?

Here's the latest FishingClub.com Performance Update:

I just got an update from IT Guy Joel, detailing the last steps in our move to better servers that will run faster and avoid the dread 500 errors. I've pasted the full text of the update into the field below. -- Web Guy Greg

"The web servers have functions for detecting when a website becomes unhealthy and restarting them when them when they become "sick." During the transition to our new hosting facility, these functions may have hidden bigger issues (mass 500 errors) so they were disabled. We will be enabling and tuning these functions today. Every effort will be made to ensure there are no outages, but there may be intermittent hiccups. Thanks for your patience." -- IT Guy Joel

The other great development is that IT Guy Joel offered to attend the weekly Social Media Editors' meeting and entertain feedback about site speed and operation, and brief us about any issues being worked on and/or give us heads up when there will be some "road maintenance" and we can break out the orange cones and vests so we can give you guys some heads up. -- Greg

All kidding aside, I think I can speak for most of the forum users when I say that we really do appreciate your efforts. Maybe I should take up a collection and buy Greg a case or two. Tom

Ola folks.

Spent the day watching the servers and pouring through system logs.

Found a few plumbing related issues which I fixed on ONE of the web servers so I can compare the results to the others to see how it does.

Plumbing related issues appear to have dropped off almost entirely, which is GREAT news.   If things are remain quiet on the fixed server I'll quietly slip the fix onto all the other machines.

This will most likely not eliminate 500s.  What it should do is reduce them to once in a blue moon affairs... without the site being unusable for hours... more like a hiccup which you can fix by simply reloading the page.

Once we get things squared away with the hosting and migration, we WILL be circling back to fix other things which aren't working right.

Just though I'd give Greg a little backup before things got rowdy in here.

-Joel

I can live with an occasional hiccup. It's the hours long disruptions and the sudden fatal error that always seem to occur just as you submit a lengthy post! The current level of communication will go a long way towards keeping the rhetoric to a civil level! Tom

I am going to post this in a few places to make sure as many members see it as possible. Out of the PC folks, who uses IE and who uses Firefox or other browser? You can also use the poll I started in the Miscellanious section. This seems to have a bearing on how the site responds! Tom

I use both IE and Firefox. I mostly use FF, but I see no difference on how slow the site is from one browser to the other.

Yes, thanks Joel, and Greg for listening to us and actually doing something! It was getting
pretty frustrating not getting any answers from NAFC. Thanks for keeping us in the loop now.

I honestly believe that it is a connection problem as it seems to come and go. There just aren't enough members online at any given time to overload even the most basic of servers. I don't claim to be an IT wizzard but certain things are pretty obvious to me- the site is usually slow and often reaches a glacial pace. I should not be getting a '500' error code on login period! Well guys;

Maybe this site is starting to quicken up a bit. I have not got a single 500 error in the past week! Hurray!

Thanks Wes, Greg, and Joel for making this site less frustrating.
