Please take action to prevent the closure of the Huron-Manistee National Forest to gun hunting. That's right. In September, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the US Forest Service’s regulations required that it consider banning hunting with firearms on lands designated as “semi-primitive” within the Huron-Manistee National Forest. The Court feels that the noise associated with gun hunting could harm the quality of the recreational experience of hikers, backpackers, and cross country skiers. This is hogwash since regular gun hunting starts September 15 and runs through November 30 -- too cold for most hikers and backpackers and too early for adequate snow for cross-country skiing.
I've written my congressnen about this. I think everyone interested should take action by contacting their congress men and/or thi US Forest Service.
