Does anyone have any tips for creek fishing sunfish, bluegill, etc. I also have recently purchased a 9ft cutthroat 5-6wt fly fishing rod and i hope to be using that more later in this year. Anyways, what lures and tips would you recommend creek fishing, as my creek hasn't completely frozen over (and I don't think it will as it just snowed and iced a few days ago and the creek was a bit sluggish, but remained flowing. ANY tips will help. Thanks |

If you're short on casting room, I'd recommend using a single-handed Spey cast. It's just like a roll cast but you can aim it a lot better than a standard roll and it requires less room. Also, this is just a personal preference, but I would try wet flies like nymphs or small streamers first because sunfish usually hide underneath structure (like a ledge) on the sides of the creek and wait for food items to float by. |

Skewl's advice is right on. I will add to his selections this; small weighted eye jig type flys that you can walk or bounce off the bottom.

A lot of the fishing i do is in a creek. a small wooly bugger in brown or black (size 8 or 10) always does good for me. a strong back up would be a very small clouser minnow (size 8-12) and if that fails i go to a san juan worm (size 12) just slowly drag or bounce it around on the bottom in the deepest and slowest moving hole you can find. when it warms up, little poppers are fun. a lot of "panfish" flies are poppers made of foam or wood with some form of legs. Creeks are a largely untapped resource as far as bass and panfish go. you might be suprised at the size of some of the fish you catch. |

The poppers i mentioned can be bought in packs of about 6 or 8 at walmart. Sports Authority, Dicks sporting goods, or academy will have the woolly buggers and various other flies like the san juan worms. basically if it can fit in a panfish's mouth it will eat it. I personally tie my own flies so im constantly expirimenting. One i have found works particularly well in the creek i fish is a very small crayfish imitation i tie. i will put up some pictures tommorow.

Thought this might be a dead topic, but I've got some tips that will definately help you with.
The temps. are probably reaching 80 (or higher) degrees where you're at, vweeks, so those fish are going to be pretty darn active. I've had a lot of success off flies, recently, including a few fish that were absolute hogs (I'll include pictures of them and, if you want, you can visit my site to view the rest).
1. Go Small! The sunfish will have problems taking in flies that are over an inch long, even if they are Green Sunfish.
2. Sight Fish If you can't see the fish well use polarized sunglasses to spot fish and cast towards them.
If you want more tips, PM me. I'll be happy to share them with you!
Not a hog, but a pretty good specimen.

A pretty good sized fish!

Another nice one!

Another good one!
All the fish above were caught off really small dry flies! |

I most certainly need to up my fly fishing tackle!! That's quite a collection my friend! What cast do you particularly use? Because the creek I fish has a thick canopy of trees and vines hanging down. |
