OK. Just got my February issue of the mag and read with interest the article on UV. I am really confused about now. (not a normal state) Berkley says that the reason Transition and Trans-Optic work is that UV light is filtered out in the top few inches of the water column. Now I read that UV penetrates the deepest of all light. Can someone please explain this and end my confusion? Tom |

Tom: We forwarded your query to Dr. Keith Jones, Pure Fishing/Berkley's VP of Product Development for Consumables. Here's his answer: "Regarding Vanish Transition and Trilene TransOptic, we have observed the line underwater and have taken underwater photos which confirm that whatever wavelength of UV triggers the color effect, that wavelength is obviously filtered as the line does change back to its original state underwater. You can also see it yourself when you fish the line -- the line that you bring up out of the water is noticeably lighter in color as it is first wound back on the spool." Hope that helps! Thanks again for your query. Regards, Web Guy Greg |

That man should run for political office! I know for a fact that Transition does work as advertised. I guess the answer to my question is that different wavelengths of UV penetrate water differently. Tom |

I can't remember if it's a huge portion of the UV spectrum is filtered out and/or reflected by the surface of water or the smaller portion of it. Something like a 70/30 rule. Somehow it seems to be enough to affect the transoptice and transistion lines. I do know that glass in itself blocks some of the UV spectrum. Namely the shorter UV wavelength. Anyway I like to check things out in my fish tank and even with the UV light. Lines that are UV bright above water, are not as bright under the water, as well as even further no as bright when viewed through glass and water. |
