Well, for channels I like to use frozen squid. It is very tough and stays on the hook till you take it off. Fish can't steal it easily. Caught my PB channel a year ago on squid. Also, squid heads make great jig trailers for bass. Better action than anything else I've ever used and they leave a scent trail in the water. A couple squid tentacles on a small hook make terrific bait for sunfish for flathead bait. Get frozen squid at any Asian supermarket in your area. |

Another nice thing about squid is that it too is a clean bait. I also use punch bait for channels, but mostly squid. For flatheads I use only live sunfish.

Wow Kroger has been out of Ohio since I was a Kid Here is a Recipie I got from the Club Way Back Hot Dogs cut up Vanilla Brown Sugar Red Koolaid for Color !!! For Catfish I Prefer to Spoil the Hot Dog Mixture then Freeze it and Spoil again to Taste ! This Bait works Great but it is Easy for the Fish to Steal the bait unless Spoiled to a dehydrated Point Thanx CM |

Store bought baits do work, I experimented alot with them when i was younger and they worked fine for me. Bluegill heads are good and so is chicken livers, bloody chicken livers! |

I keep hearing about soaking your bait in strawberry Kool-Aid for catfish. Do you use sugar in the mix or just the powder? Do you mix it like you would for drinking or make something more like a syrup? Seems sometimes the details tend to be left out! I am going to have to find an Asian market to purchase squid as there is not a sizeable asian population near me. Tom |

Like everyone else, I have always had luck using the old school baits. Night Crawlers, Chicken Livers, Stink Baits, squid, and shrimp always get the job done with a little know how. However, using different techniques with proven baits seems to be the key for success. One day in the summer of 2009 while fishing for Catfish with a friend at Lake Mead (Las Vegas, NV). Evening was approaching and we cast out for some good ole' night fishin'. Within 5 minutes my buddy's ugly stick was landing some pretty Catfish. On his second cast before he could even get the rod in its holder he landed another one. After his third one I started wondering what I was doing wrong, we were using the same bait. At least that's what I thought. Apparently where I went wrong was going to the grocery market to buy the prepackaged uncooked shrimp from the seafood section. Although this had been my proven bait on countless occasions, on this particular day I could not even get a bite. Come to find out the shrimp he had picked up were from a specialty seafood store where they sold them fresh with the head and legs still attached. He would peel the shell off and detach the head leaving the guts exposed. The effectiveness of this technique has been catching countless fish for me ever since. The only bait that I have found to be twice as powerful is fresh Mackerel cut into chunks or strips. This may be difficult to acquire depending on your location or local market. The rig I use most often is the Carolina Rig with 1/2 oz. egg sinker, 8-12 lb. mono, 24'' 10lb fluro leader, #10 or 12 swivel, red beads, and 3/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Offset Hooks. I Hope this can help someone catch their Limit. If anyone has any ideas, techniques, or questions regarding this set-up or bait please comment.

Don't know how new the bait is, but I put my money on Danny King's Punch Bait. You can find it online or at Wal-Mart or Sports Authority. Got this tip from a fellow catfish hunter at Kennedy Lake last year in Tucson, Az. Told me about Danny King as he caught his 4 channel catfish limit in less than an hour. I went out and bought a jar a few days later and started catching cat left and right. Caught my personal best (around 24" and weighed about 6 pounds. Not huge, but definitely a big catch for me) on Danny King punch bait and will probably never use anything else. Easy to use, stays on the treble hook and is inexpensive. Thanks for looking. |

I'm no pro nor do I claim to be but in the spring this what you will probably score with. Live or fresh cut Shad. Shad will also work all summer long as well as well as large emerald shinners. If your fishing lakes you want to start looking in the shallows with some cover for your cats. Rivers, streams, creeks, what ever you want to call them look at the outside corners where the banks are cut away you will get a little deeper hole there and they will stack up untill the water warms. The main key to wherever you fish is cover, kats love cover (remember they are predators and ambush prey). If you are limited to bank fishing and you find cover (log jams, riprap, large boulder piles) head a little upstream of them and cast back towards it. Get as close to it as you can without getting hung up and enjoy. If you have a boat or have access to one then it's a whole new game. Trolling or drifting is the game here. In the spring hit the shallows, find the shad and you find the cats. Also drift the original channel that runs through the lake as well. I could go on and on but then this post becomes boring and long. Give these some thought and try them out and see how it works for you. Shad the katfish candy. Tight lines bent rods and big fish to all |

Yeah, I heard about squid from a European fishing book. They were talking about using them for Wels Catfish, though. |
